Dalian Medical University was established in 1947 as Kanto Medical School. In 1949 Dalian Medical University became a part of Dalian University with the name Medical School of Dalian University. After separation from Dalian University in 1950, the university immigrated to Zunyi, Guizhou province with the name Zunyi Medical School. Dalian Medical University was renamed in 1994 after being reestablished in its original address in 1978.
