About Laval University

Laval University is the very first French-language university in North America. It was established in 1663 by Monsignor François de Montmorency-Laval in Quebec City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage City. Nearly 200 years later, in 1852, this institution became a university and the first building block for all French-language higher education in Canada, and North America. 

The university has 17 faculties and more than 60 departments, schools, and institutes with 5 study profiles which include Sustainable Development, Honours, Entrepreneurial, International, and Research. Laval University offers more than 550 programmes amongst which 150 programmes are offered for distance learning and there are more than 2000 courses offered online. 

The university has more than 47,000 students, 65% of them are full-time learners, whereas 28% are postgraduate or research students. Over 90% of Laval’s undergraduate programmes include mandatory or elective paid internships giving work exposure to students. Université Laval is a French-language institution, with most of its courses offered in French. However, a few of the courses are offered in English and the university is a popular destination for overseas students.

Laval University’s library system ranked amongst the top universities in Canada for its extensive research collection and expanded digital services. A number of research centres and institutions are also located at the university, including COPL, CRIQ, INRS, and IUCPQ. The university has also been ranked at 441 position by QS World University Rankings 2024.

Université Laval is Canada's first voluntarily carbon-neutral university. According to United Nations goals, Times Higher Education 2023 places it sixth globally and second in Canada for its efforts to combat climate change. Laval University Eligibility

All candidates applying to Laval University must match the following eligibility criteria:

  • They must hold a diploma attesting to 13 years of education or equivalent (DCS, or DEC in French)

  • French baccalaureate

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) from an English-speaking country with 3 “A Levels” in subjects preparing for the desired university program

  • For admission to graduate programmes, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree (North American BA, licence or master’s, depending on the system of education) or have successfully completed a level of education deemed equivalent by the admissions committee.

  • For admission to research programmes, a graduate degree (North American master’s degree, French DEA) or have successfully completed a level of education deemed equivalent by the admissions committee is required.

  • Some programmes have specific admission criteria, which must be fulfilled by applicants.

Laval University Accommodation

Laval University offers more than 2,300 rooms for all students within the campus. All residences are co-ed, except the pavillon Agathe-Lacerte where rooms are reserved only for women during the academic period of September to April. Common areas are smoke-free in all housing residences. Students are provided with all the amenities including Laundry, Heating, Mail, Electricity, Storing personal effects, Housekeeping, Pest control, Appliance, breakage repairs and equipment rentals. 

There are a few Standard university rooms and studios for short term living as well. All accommodations have lounges and common areas, along with a kitchen, game rooms, study rooms, music room and a Visual Studio room as well.
