About University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is an Australian public research institution based in Tasmania. It is Australia's fourth oldest university which was founded in 1890. There are four campuses of the University of Tasmania Australia- in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, and Sydney. The Hobart campus is in the south, the Launceston campus is in the north, and the Burnie campus is in the northwestern part of Tasmania. The Sydney campus is in the state of New South Wales.

The Burnie Campus of the University of Tasmania is one of the largest campuses in Tasmania's northwest. It is co-located with Hellyer College and the University of Tasmania in Burnie's Mooreville Road education. The Burnie Campus has a Rural Clinical School, which allows medical students to complete clinical internships in Tasmania's rural and remote locations. 

The College of Arts, Law and Education, College of Health and Medicine, College of Sciences and Engineering, Tasmanian School of Business and Economics, and University College are the five colleges that constitute the University of Tasmania Australia. The University of Tasmania courses include a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of different fields, including business and law, creative arts and design, earth, sea, and Antarctic environment, education, humanities and social sciences, health and medicine, and science, technology, and engineering. 

The university supports five multidisciplinary research themes: Data, Knowledge, and Decisions; Better Health; Environment, Resources, and Sustainability; Creativity, Culture, and Society; and Marine, Antarctic, and Maritime which allow for interdisciplinary collaboration. University of Tasmania Admission and Application

Before applying to the University of Tasmania, applicants must check the eligibility criteria carefully and other details regarding the course they are applying for. There are different application processes for undergraduate and postgraduate for international applicants. Detailed information on the application process is given below.

How to apply at the University of Tasmania for International Applicants?

  • First, go to the official website of the University of Tasmania at utas.edu.au and find a course. One can apply for up to five courses at once and there is no University of Tasmania application fee for international students.

  • The applicants must check if they meet the entry requirements given on the course page on the university’s official website. Also, they must check additional entry requirements for international students such as English language requirements and Entry requirements by country.  Some courses may also require auditions, interviews, portfolios, or questionnaires.

  • The applicants can apply for recognition of prior learning if they meet its requirements.

  • Apply directly through the University of Tasmania’s application portal or an authorised University of Tasmania agent.

  • Fill in all the details and submit the application with all the required documents.

  • The application is then assessed by the university. Then the university will notify the applicant whether the application is successful or not within one or two weeks from the date of receiving the application.

  • If successful, an offer letter is sent to the applicant which has to be accepted, and the instructions of which has to be followed to enroll in the university.

  • If unsuccessful, the applicant can contact the ‘Information Centre’ of the university to know if there are other options available.

  • Accept the offer letter and pay the semester tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and any other fees indicated on the Letter of Offer through the application portal. 

  • Then the applicants will get an e-confirmation email which is needed for applying for student visa for Australia.

  • On accepting the offer, the applicants will get access to the University of Tasmania Systems within 24 hours. 

  • Apply for a scholarship after meeting the requirements. It is not compulsory to be academically exceptional to get a scholarship. There is an extensive range of scholarships in Australia that are available.

Documents Required for University of Tasmania Admission

Depending on the course the student has applied for, students will need to provide specific documentation. The following documents are required for admission to the University:

  • A copy of the passport

  • A signed copy of the Supervisory support form

  • A Research Proposal

  • Certified copies of academic transcripts/academic records and testamur/degree certificates for all previous university studies, complete and incomplete. A copy of the applicant’s research thesis (from his/her Honours or Masters degree)

  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV) which must include the contact details of two referees

  • Evidence of English language proficiency

For International Applicants

  • Evidence of English Language proficiency (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL)

  • Academic transcripts including English translations

  • Evidence of previous studies if applying for recognition of prior learning including official course and unit outlines.

All the documents must be original or certified copies.

University of Tasmania Scholarship

The University of Tasmania offers a range of scholarships across all areas of study. Domestic and international students can apply for multiple scholarships in one easy application. Scholarships can provide financial support or recognition for achievements.

University of Tasmania Scholarships For International Students

Tasmanian International Scholarship - The scholarship is available for all international students taking admission at the University of Tasmania. Selection is based on the academic achievement at secondary, diploma, and degree level courses. The 25% of the total tuition fees will be deducted for the duration of the course.

Singapore Maritime Academy Scholarship - This scholarship is for students from Singapore Maritime Academy who are enrolled in Bachelor of Global Logistics and Maritime Management (P3E). It covers 20% of the total tuition fees for 1 year of study.

  • All international students must meet the minimum English language and academic entry requirements to study at the University of Tasmania.

  • Admission to the University of Tasmania undergraduate courses requires qualifications equivalent to the 12th year in Australia.

  • Admission to most University of Tasmania postgraduate courses requires qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies and meet any prerequisite subjects to be eligible for an offer.

Study Amenities

Wifi

All students and staff at the University of Tasmania have free Wi-Fi access throughout all campuses. All buildings, lecture theatres, and libraries have Wi-Fi access. Eduroam is the wireless network used across all the campuses of the university by its students and staff while UGuest is the wireless network used by the public.

Library

The nine libraries across all the campuses of the university offering a wide range of materials, such as books, journals, and online databases. The libraries also include study areas, computer labs, and copying, printing, and scanning services. The educational events are allowed to be held in libraries with permission from the libraries’ primary stakeholders.

Amenities and Clubs

Alumni Associations

At Tasmania University, students after graduating automatically become part of its alumni community. They are offered various facilities such as getting Library borrower membership free of charge. Also, they can access limited e-resources of the library. They don’t have to be in Tasmania or to register for availing this benefit. Also, they have access to the University Club. A fee waiver offer is also available for the alumni to encourage them to further their studies at the University of Tasmania. Unigym is also available for its alumni along with its students, faculty, and staff.

Transportation

Transport Facility

The University of Tasmania provides various sustainable transport options for students and staff to get to, from, and around its campuses. These options include public transport, active transport, and ridesharing. Metro buses run frequently between Hobart, Launceston, and Cradle Coast campuses. Full-time students are eligible to receive concession fares on presentation of a UTAS-issued student ID. Cycling is a great way to get to campus, and our campuses offer a range of bicycle facilities. E-scooters are welcome on all campuses. Liftango is a ridesharing app exclusively for the university community.

Parking Facility

Parking places are quite scarce on each UTAS campus. Students, faculty, and guests are all permitted to park in the allotted car parking spaces.  The majority of campuses provide visitor parking and voucher (pay and display) facilities, with the exception of Hobart CBD sites. On the Sandy Bay and Newnham campuses, there are a limited number of free, student-only parking spaces. On-campus parking for students is also free at West Park. They will require digital permission (ePermit) to enter these areas. Campus visitors have access to hourly paid parking. These zones are marked with blue on-ground markings in parking lots run by the university.

In order to support persons with disabilities in school, employment, and life in general, assistive technologies have been developed at the University of Tasmania. JAWS, ZoomText, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and Read & Write are the four assistive technology software solutions that UTAS IT Services offers to help students with disabilities access and participate in their studies.

University of Tasmania Accommodation

The University of Tasmania provides accommodation options for students at all of its campuses. On the Cradle Coast campus, the West Park apartments are located steps away from the campus and offer self-contained living spaces with a kitchen, bathroom, and study area. The apartments are furnished with a queen-size bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, mirror, and drawers. They also have Wi-Fi access and laundry facilities. The apartments fall under the Australian Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme, which provides affordable living for students who meet the eligibility requirements. The university also offers communal living colleges and shared apartments as accommodation options. Students can choose from a range of sustainable transport options to get to and from the campus, including public transport, active transport, and ridesharing.

The University of Tasmania provides both on-campus and off-campus housing. Self-contained apartments, community living communities, and residence halls are among the on-campus housing possibilities. For students who need short-term lodging, the institution also provides choices for short-term housing. Private shared apartments and single rooms are offered on surrounding campuses as off-campus housing choices. The university is a participant in the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS), which offers students who qualify for affordable housing.
