i am in the secound year of b.tech.From where i can prepare for gre exam??

Shraya Singh 26th Jul, 2018

Hi Ayansh,

There are 2 paths you could follow for the preparation of GRE:

1. Take up a GRE coaching from a renowned coaching institute. This can take from 1-3 months depending on the coaching program you select.

2. Self study for the GRE. This will take 2-4 months depending on the amount of time you devote to preparation. On average, 2 hours a day will be sufficient to complete your preparation in under 3 months.

Month 1:

For the self study option, the best preliminary vocabulary preparation method would be to read the book 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. This is easily available in bookstores and online in under INR 200.

For further vocabulary preparation, revise the Barron’s 333 high frequency word list, the Manhattan 1000 word list and the Barron’s 1100 word list. Out of these, the 333 word list is the most important and integral for getting a good GRE score.

Month 2:

The most important aspect of GRE preparation is practice. The GRE is often considered to a be test not for a student’s scholastic ability but for his ability to take the GRE. Therefore, after 1 month of vocabulary preparation, you should start doing 15-30 verbal questions per day in order to ensure that you achieve a good score.

For quantitative preparation, only a 10th grade mathematical level is required. Therefore, you will not have to do much prior preparation apart from going through the official ETS GRE guide book. After this, you can start with 15-30 practice questions per day.

Month 3:

Finally, in the last month, you should focus on sample papers and preparation for the Analytical Writing section. This section requires you to write two essays which are assessed on a 6.0 scale. Reading sample essays and practicing 4-10 essays should be enough preparation for this section.

You can try GRE anytime but I advise you to give it a shot in the second year. Settle yourself first and then be focused rather than jumping into it out of excitement.

best universities for engineering management in US for the gre score of 310-320

Shraya Singh 27th Aug, 2018

Hello Swati,

There is generally no hard and fast rule for the GRE score required for admission to any postgraduate program in a university as they collectively look at the applicant's GRE scores, CV, Statement of Purpose and the Letters of Recommnedation. The GRE scores are generally only a screening basis for applicants to be shortlisted after their Statement of Purpose is evaluated by the committee, therefore, if you ensure that all your other application materials are impressive, then often the admissions committee overlooks a deficiency in the GRE score.

That said, it is still an important criteria for initial segregation of applications. The best colleges (under 100 in the US New ranking) generally accept GRE scores above 320 or 325. Therefore, with a score of 310-320 you can apply to some of the other colleges and universities which are ranked more than 100. For engineering, management related courses, the focus is primarily on the Quantitative scores which hold more weight than the overall GRE score. You will need a Quantitative score above 160 for admission to the good colleges, therefore, a score of 310-320 is enough if your Quantitative Reasoning score is above 160+. Some universities which you could apply to are:

1. Virginia Tech

2. Arizona State University

3. Pennsylvania State University

4. Boston University

5. New York University

Ratula 8th Aug, 2018

Hello Anish,

That would depend on your GRE score/university you are applying to/your belonging to any reserved category. You should try and get an internship if possible at this point, and try to improve your score in subsequent semesters.

Is Gre necessary for taking admission in graduate English literature programme

Shraya Singh 12th Jul, 2018

For most of the top universities for a Masters in English Literature (UCB, University of Oxford, Colombia University, UCLA, University of Cambridge etc.) there is no GRE requirement. Despite this, submitting GRE scores (with the verbal test scores 160+ out of 170 and the analytical writing scores 5+ out of 6) will definitely help boost your application and act as a valuable credential to be considered when the admissions committee takes a look at your application material. Although, if you are applying for a graduate program in English literature and you score less than 160 in the verbal section of the GRE general test, then it is advised to not send in your scores if the University doesn't require them.

The only test scores which are absolutely integral to each and every university for a graduate program in English literature would be the English language proficiency test scores.

The breakdown of scores for IELTS should be at least 7 in all four individual sections (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and an overall score of 7.5 is preferred for admission.

The breakdown of scores for TOEFL should be at least 25 out of 30 in each individual section (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and an overall score of around 110 out of 120 is preferred.

If the applicant is looking forward to obtaining a TA (Teaching Assistantship) position alongside graduate education, then the speaking score requirements are often around 27 or 28 out of 30 depending on the specific university.

Ill finsh my engineering graduate in 2019 July..when can i apply for gre exam ???

Shraya Singh 9th Jul, 2018

You can apply for the GRE exam at any time of the year as a number of dates are available to give the exam in each month.

First you must register onto the official ETS website, using this account you can check the availability (dates and timings) for GRE exams proctored at locations near you. Additionally, the score remains valid for 5 years, therefore you can also give the exam before your graduation.

Most students give the GRE exam in their 7th semester around the months of September and October in order to be able to apply for fall admissions to various universities. Therefore, if you give the exam before October, you will be able to apply to colleges for the Fall 2019 session as the applications for most colleges will close by December 2018 or January 2019.
