The FMGE passing percentage in China for 2024-25 has become a significant concern for Indian medical students studying abroad, directly impacting their ability to practice medicine in India. A total of 14,214 students from China appeared for FMGE 2024 out of which only 2,765 students cleared the FMGE. So, the FMGE passing percentage for China for 2024-25 is around 19.45%. This means that out of every 100 students who appeared for FMGE only 19.45 cleared the exam. If we consider individual universities offering medical education in China then some universities have even lower pass percentage. The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), overseen by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), is a crucial licensing exam for Indian citizens who have obtained their medical degrees from foreign universities. This exam ensures that graduates returning to India meet the necessary standards for clinical practice within the country's healthcare system. In recent years, China has become a popular destination for Indian students. In the last academic year, more than 9,000 Indian students were studying MBBS in China. The above data shows that in some universities, FMGE passing percentage is 100% for China. However, the number of students who appeared for the FMGE at the university is only 1. Hence, the 100% passing percentage does not necessarily mean that the university provides good quality education.

However, one of the main challenges is the difference between the medical curriculum offered in Chinese universities and that set by Indian medical authorities. Variations in clinical exposure, teaching methods, and even the language of instruction can influence students.

NMC/MCI Approved Medical Colleges in China

NMC/MCI has not approved any medical colleges in China recently. However, candidates should enrol in those universities only whose MBBS program is meeting the NMC guidelines. NMC last released the list of NMC approved and recognised list of medical colleges in China in 2019. There are 45 universities authorised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, as per the pass percentage of Indian students in FMGE.

Popular Medical Universities in China

Studying MBBS in China takes 6 years, which includes 1 year of clinical internship. For international students who finish the 5 years of medical training in China, a provisional degree is awarded. Once they complete the 12 months internship, they receive their final MBBS degree. Indian students aiming to pursue an MBBS in China in 2025 need to pass the Chinese medical qualification examination to get a Physician's license in the country. According to the NMC guidelines, those Indian students who want to practice medicine back in India must secure a Chinese medical license to be eligible for the FMGE screening test.
