- Being one of the most preferred courses in the world, engineering programmes attract millions of aspirants every year. When we talk about international students, USA gets the largest chunk. Nearly 20% of international students in USA pursue STEM subjects of which engineering is a part. Not just that, engineering colleges have alone attracted over 196,000 international students in 2014. One of the major factors behind the popularity of US engineering colleges is their investment towards research oriented and skill based courses which are of interest to both industry focused as well as academically inclined students.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Founded in 1861, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the best engineering college not only in the USA but all over the globe. Another reason why MIT is preferred by engineering aspirants is that the institute presents many research opportunities through its engineering programmes that are divided among various departments like Nuclear Science, Civil Engineering, Biological Engineering and Computer Science, among others.

How to Apply:

To apply in the MIT School of Engineering, you are required to submit your academic transcripts along with GRE scores. Some departments also require GRE subject test scores. Besides GRE, applicants will have to show proof of their English proficiency through TOEFL scores. You need to score at least 100 in TOEFL IBT to be selected for an MIT engineering programme. In PBT, your scores should be at least 600.  SAT score is required by the institute at the undergraduate level and in addition to SAT 1 scores, MIT also asks for subject test scores of Maths and Science (Physics, Chemistry or Biology).

 

To apply to MIT, students have to open a MyMITaccount. If your application is shortlisted, you will have to go through an interview round. Beside your scores, you will also have to submit at least two reference letters and a Statement of Purpose (SOP) stating why you want to pursue the programme.

 

Applications, generally, open in August and close around the first week of January the next year.

 

Fees: Approximate total fees for the postgraduate programme at MIT is $46,400 and that for the UG  programme is $40,451.

 

STANFORD UNIVERSITY2. Stanford University:

One of the top engineering colleges in USA, Stanford University has been creating advanced technologies in the field of medicine, business, communication, information technology, among others. Founded in 1891, the prestigious university ranks number 2 in the list of top 10 engineering colleges in the USA according to QS. Stanford offers plenty of reasons for aspirants to head to the university, one of them being the Co- Terminal program, which is an integrated programme allowing students to pursue a Masters degree parallel to their undergraduate degree. Hence, students can get an undergraduate as well as Master’s degree within 5 years.

 

How to Apply:

Aspirants will have to submit their academic transcripts along with 3 to 6 recommendation letters, depending on the department. Statement of Purpose is another document that the student will have to submit, stating his/her reasons to join the institute.

 

Students are required to take TOEFL test as a proof of English proficiency. For the Master’s programme in engineering, an aspirant requires 89 in TOEFL IBT and 575 in the PBT test. GRE scores are required for most programmes, though GRE subject test scores are demanded by only some departments. SAT score is also required by the engineering departments of Stanford at the undergraduate level.

 

Aspirants will have to apply by the 1st week of December.  

 

Fees: Fees for postgraduate programmes is around $42,240 for 8-10 units and $64,960 for less than 8 units. For UG programmes, the approximate fee is $45,729 .

 

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA3. University of California, Berkeley (UCB)

The list of top 10 engineering colleges in USA is incomplete without the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), that ranks third among the best engineering colleges in the world according to QS. The university offers a wide range of engineering programmes like Bioengineering, Civil and Environmental engineering. What more? UCB has a strong alumni network of Nobel Prize winners and founders of 250 plus companies.

 

How to Apply:

Aspirants will have to furnish their academic transcripts with the university and prove their English language proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS scores. The student will need to score a minimum 90 IBT in TOEFL and a minimum 7 bands score in IELTS to be considered for admission.

 

Aspirants will further have to submit GRE scores of both the aptitude and subject tests. SAT is required by UCB for admission at the undergrduate level. Apart from this, aspirants will have to submit three letters of recommendation from three different subject teachers along with an SOP.

 

Applications, generally, begin by September and go on till December. Admissions may stretch to February depending on the engineering department.

 

Fees: Fees for a graduate engineering degree may be approximately $54,301 and  that for an undergraduate degree is around $41,000.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY4. Harvard University:

It will be a dream come true for any aspirant passionate about engineering to get into Harvard, one of the top engineering colleges in the USA. And, why not? The prestigious university boasts of world class facilities, along with research opportunities in fields like Design Engineering, Bioengineering, Computational Science and Engineering, to name a few. Currently, the engineering school of Harvard, John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, offers six undergraduate concentrations in Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Sciences and Mechanical Engineering.  

 

How to Apply:

To become a part of the institution, the students will have to first apply and submit their academic transcripts online. The aspirants will also have to attach 3 reference letters, a statement of purpose, resume and fill the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Science application form.

 

For UG, the tests to be taken are SAT/ACT along with 1 SAT subject test. Those whose native language is not English will have to take TOEFL, with minimum 80 score in IBT. IELTS is not accepted. Aspirants will need two of their teachers from different subjects to fill a Teach Evaluation form specific to Harvard. GRE is required for the admission to Masters engineering programmes.

 

Applications open in September. Students seeking admission may apply by mid-December, as Harvard offers admission once a year in Fall only.

 

Fees: The fee for a graduate program may cost around $41,832 and UG around $47,074.

 

CALTECH 5. Caltech

Caltech is one of the best engineering colleges in the USA which attracts a large number of international students to its campus every year. Caltech offers research opportunities to passionate engineering students through its laboratories like the Caltech Seismological Laboratory and jet propulsion laboratory. Students can choose from a wide range of programmes like bioengineering, aeronautics, civil engineering, among others.

 

How to Apply: To apply to Caltech, students need to first fill the online application form and submit the required documents. The applicant then has to submit an SOP along with letters of recommendation and a resume. As far as the tests are concerned, one will have to take GRE for PG programmes and SAT for UG. IELTS or TOEFL scores might have to be submitted as proof of English proficiency. The scores for each of the tests may vary as per the programme.

Fees: Caltech University’s fee is around $43,710 for a graduate programme and $45,846 for an undergraduate programme.

 

Georgia Institute of Technology6. Georgia Institute of Technology (Gatech)

Aspirants then have to share the scores of GRE along with TOEFL for English language proficiency, where one must score 79 minimum in IBT  and 550 in PBT. SAT is required for UG engineering courses. Both SAT and ACT are accepted by the university.

University Of California7. University Of California, Los Angeles(UCLA)

One of the top 10 engineering colleges in USA, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has produced over 30 Nobel Prize winners and continues to engage in pioneering work in the field of engineering and technology. In ARWU, the university has been placed at the 12th position while QS has placed it among the top 30 engineerings colleges in the world . A proof of its popularity among students is the fact that it is  among some of the most applied to universities in the USA. In 2015 itself, the university received more than 92,000 freshman applications.

 

How to Apply:

The university requires aspirants to furnish all academic transcripts and any international student, whose native language is not English, to take English proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS. International aspirants will have to score a minimum of 87 IBT in TOEFL and minimum of 7 in IELTS, respectively.

GRE is another test required by the university, and one has to score at least above 79 in Verbal and 92 in Quantitative. A score above 4.0  in Analytical writing is ideal. Admission into the UCLA UG programme also requires students to submit their SAT scores. Along with that, one will have to submit a personal essay, recommendation letters, whose number varies among departments.

 

International aspirants should apply by December 1st for admission to engineering programmes.

 

Fees: Tuition fee for UCLA graduate is around $31,011 and that for UG is $43,398.

 

Princeton University8. Princeton University

The world renowned university offers various programs spanning across fields like Engineering, Architecture, Humanities, to name a few. However, it is Princeton's engineering school which is much sought after by international students planning to get an engineering degree either at the graduate or undergraduate level. Some of the programmes offered by the university's engineering school are Mechanical Engineering, Chemical engineering, Masters in Science and Engineering. Currently, the university has over 2000 students enrolled in its various engineering programmes.

 

How to Apply:

International students have to apply directly to the department or the program. The aspirants will have to submit their academic transcripts and other necessary documents like letter of recommendation, statement of purpose and resume.

 

One can apply to Princeton University through GRE, TOEFL and SAT scores. In TOEFL, aspirants have to score above 28 in speaking section. Another English proficiency test to be taken is IELTS, where one has to score minimum 8 band or above. However, SAT is recommended but not required as such by Princeton.

 

Interested international students can apply between September and December.

 

Fees: Princeton University Graduate tuition fee - $45,350 and $45,540 for UG.

 

Carnegie Mellon University9.  Carnegie Mellon University

How to Apply: If international students are considering getting enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University, they have to submit their academic transcripts and supplemental materials such as test scores, 3 letters of recommendation, updated resume and statement of purpose.

 

Test scores of GRE and SAT are required at the PG and UG levels, respectively. Further, students have to show proof of English proficiency through TOEFL or  IELTS scores. Candidates have to score 84 IBT score and 6 band score in TOELF and IELTS respectively.

 

Applications open around September and close by December and January, depending on the programme.

 

Fees: Approximate tuition fee for the  CMU graduate programme is $42,000 and that for the UG programme is $51,196

How to Apply: Aspirants have to submit academic transcripts with supplemental materials such as test scores of tests like GRE, SAT, TOEFL or IELTS. There is no minimum score for GRE, whereas for TOEFL one has to score between 79-102 depending on the program and above 6.5 bands for IELTS. Apart from that, you have to submit 3 LORs and SOPs along with a resume.

 

For international students, applications for spring will be available in October while that for Fall, January is the deadline.  The university also offers Rolling admission.

 

Fees: Tuition fee for graduate program is $31,626 while that for the UG programme is $35,164.

Hope you're doing well.

Yes, you can do PhD after completion of M.Sc, Even you can do Integrated PhD while perusing your M.Sc. For PhD, you must need to complete your masters in the same area of specialization.

Most Universities/Colleges offer admission based on the score of CET (like UGC NET) or conduct their own entrance test (like JNU) for admission into Ph.D. courses hence students would have to make an application for such exams.
