An LOR is a document that evaluates an MBA applicant's performance in both academic and non-academic areas. It is mandatory for MBA aspirants to provide both professional and academic recommendation letters to the Admission Committee.
It is noteworthy that the majority of universities worldwide ask for two to three letters of recommendation for MBA programs. Out of these, at least one of these letters should be written by an employer or supervisor. It is crucial to note that the recommenders should have had a direct professional engagement with the applicants for a duration of at least two to three years.
The most impressive letters of recommendation for MBA programs are those that reflect the recommender’s genuine assessment, rather than catering to what they think the business school wants to hear. Applicants can follow the tips below to secure a compelling LOR from their supervisor or manager:
It is mandatory that one of the candidate’s MBA Letters of Recommendation (LORs) should be provided by his/her present supervisor. Certain universities have implemented stringent policies regarding this requirement.
It is advisable for a candidate to openly communicate with his/her manager or supervisor in order to discuss his/her future visions and goals in advance.
It is important to be transparent and truthful with the recommender, ensuring that all application details are shared with them.
Discuss the contents of the MBA Statement of Purpose with the recommender to ensure alignment with the Letter of Recommendation.
It is advisable to ask for a recommendation letter a minimum of three to four weeks prior to the application deadline in order to provide recommenders with ample time to complete it.
Candidates should provide a concise overview of the projects he/she has been involved in at the company, which the supervisor can use as a reference when composing a Letter of Recommendation for his/her MBA application.
Candidates are recommended to have a conversation with their recommender about their performance and inquire about their perspective on them. A candidate should express his/her views but refrain from imposing them. It is important to remember that universities give weightage to MBA recommendation letters that are authentic and well-crafted.
It is essential to have someone who can effectively showcase the applicant's qualities through relevant examples and anecdotes when writing the MBA Letter of Recommendation. Refer to the provided guidelines for crafting a strong recommendation for MBA applications.
The first paragraph of your MBA course LOR should clearly outline the recommender's title, organization, and relationship with the applicant.
The second paragraph should discuss the specific job responsibilities of the applicants within the organization. It is important to evaluate their performance, highlight any outstanding accomplishments, and assess their relationship with other team members.
In the third paragraph, provide details about the project, seminar, workshop, etc. that the applicant was involved in, along with his/her specific contributions. Mention what aspects of these experiences were most impressive.
Here, the recommender should share any examples where the candidate has offered innovative solutions to problems that have benefited the team and the organization. Try to elaborate on any professional activities of the candidate that the recommender believes would be valuable for the Admission Committee to know. Additionally, the recommender can discuss the candidate’s entrepreneurial abilities and potential.
This section should conclude with a formal closing including the recommender’s name, title, signature, and contact information.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
In my capacity as the Director at ABC Works, Chandigarh, I would like to recommend XYZ for admission to the Master of Business Administration program at LMN Business School. XYZ has been working in our company as an Electrical Maintenance Engineer. I have known him for the last six years since August 2018 when he joined the company. His major job responsibilities included the development and management of electricity in our unit. He always accepted new challenges and took initiatives to solve them. Moreover, his time management skills and creative thinking gave him the upper hand among other employees.
XYZ played a great role in establishing Electrical Energy auditing methods that improved the efficiency of our production line and enabled cost savings of around INR1.5 lacs per month. He was always upfront to take leadership roles and coordinated with other team members very well. As a leader, he focussed on team goals and always tried to take other members towards mutual progress.
During the solar power plant establishment project, XYZ was the head coordinator of the electrical team. He coordinated with his team members very well and gave his valuable contributions. He provided proper guidelines to complete the project successfully and completed his technical roles of circuit and panel designing very well. I came to know about his good leadership skills during his temporary role shift to head of the electrical department where he managed the whole department very well.
XYZ has a very logical and creative approach towards his work. Initially, our company used delta/star motor starters, which usually led to high voltage jerks and electrical losses. After analysing the situation, he suggested using Variable Frequency Drives instead of delta/star starters which improved the power factor, reduced maximum demand, and led to electrical cost savings of 12 to 15%.
XYZ is very keen to learn and grow in the management sector. He always interacts with our company’s senior managers to gain their valuable knowledge and experience regarding management. Pursuing a graduate education in management will help him grow in this field and achieve his goal of becoming a successful manager.
Sincerely,

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
As the Head of the Department of Management Studies, it gives me immense pleasure to provide this letter of recommendation for ABC, who came as a student in August 2021 for the BBA program at PQR College of Management and Technology, New Delhi. He studied under my guidance for three years. I taught him the ‘Business and Management Concepts’ subject during his first year of college.
ABC completed his Bachelor of Business Administration with an aggregate score of 72%. He is a hardworking student and possesses good communication skills. During his enrolled program, I observed that he wholeheartedly completed his assignments on time and showed enthusiasm when approached for participating in quizzes and other events.
In my observation, ABC is a soft-spoken, straightforward, and honest person who completes his work with passion and determination. I have received the same feedback regarding him from other teachers as well. He always raised queries regarding Business and Management Concepts and had a sound knowledge of various management theories and approaches.
I found ABC to be very innovative as well as creative in his approach to deciding the future course of action. Most prominently, I remember the Teacher’s Day celebration event on 5th September that he organized for our college staff with the help of his co-students. He handled all the activities very well by leading his fellow students to organize entertaining performances and arranging refreshments for all the present staff and students.
I highly recommend ABC to the program for which he seeks admission. He has proved to be a very good student and I believe he would make a great asset to any organization. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Please feel free to contact me at the undermentioned address.
