The National Medical Commission (NMC) plays a crucial role in regulating medical education and practice in India. It ensures that both national and international medical qualifications align with national standards. Over the years, the NMC, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian embassies, has consistently warned students about enrolling in certain foreign medical universities that do not meet the necessary criteria set by the FMGL Regulations, 2021. While the NMC does not officially endorse any university for studying medicine abroad, it does provide essential NMC guidelines for MBBS abroad that must be followed to practice medicine in India. Recently, following alerts from the Indian Embassy in Mexico and the Eurasia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, the NMC has warned Indian students to avoid specific foreign medical institutions. NMC does not endorse any university, but if the medical institutions abroad violate Indian medical education standards, then students are alerted to the same. Recently, NMC has issued an advisory warning related to a few medical institutions of violating the Indian medical education standards. As a result, aspiring Indian students are strictly advised not to seek admission in the following medical universities:
Central American Health and Sciences University, Belize
Columbus Central University, Belize
Washington University of Health and Sciences, Belize
Chirchik Branch of Tashkent State Medical University, Uzbekistan

If a candidate takes admission to these universities, they will be ineligible to register for medical practice in India. According to the NMC, any violation of the FMGL Regulations, 2021, can result in disqualification during the screening or final registration process. Even with multiple warnings, it has been noted that Indian students are still pursuing admission to foreign medical schools that do not meet the standards set by the FMGL Regulations, 2021. Make sure the following guidelines are being met by the chosen medical institution.
Duration of the course: For those aspiring to pursue an MBBS, it is essential to follow the 54-month rule, meaning that the minimum academic period required for medical education abroad is 54 months (or 4.5 years).
Medium of instruction: Courses must be taught entirely in English, as no other language is accepted.
Syllabus and curriculum: It is mandatory to study core subjects, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Psychiatry, among others.
Clinical training: MBBS students are required to complete full-time clinical rotations in the same country where they received their medical education. Additionally, all clinical training must align with the standards of the Indian MBBS curriculum.
Internship or clerkship arrangements: It is mandatory to complete a 12-month internship.
Pursuing MBBS abroad can open up great opportunities for Indian students, but it is crucial to conduct thorough research before applying. The NMC has warned students multiple times to avoid medical institutes abroad that do not meet standards or are derecognized. Students need to adhere to the FMGL Regulations, 2021, also known as the NMC guidelines, and stay updated on the NMC website and Indian embassies. Ignoring these guidelines could lead to being disqualified from practicing medicine in India.
