As per the NIRF 2025 Rankings, prestigious universities like Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have taken the top spots. IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay are not far behind IIT Madras, which has maintained its top spot for the seventh consecutive year. Among India's top ten engineering colleges is VIT. Surprisingly, these universities rank much lower globally in the QS World University Rankings. The question is, ‘what is the reason for this gap?’ In this article, we will delve further to know the reasons why NIRF institutions do not rank on top positions in QS rankings.

In 2015, the Ministry of Education, government of India launched an initiative to give rankings to the higher education institutions in the country, named as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). This initiative assesses and evaluates universities, engineering, medical, management colleges, and law schools in India. The NIRF ranks depend on the following parameters.
Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) – Faculty quality, infrastructure, and student–faculty ratio.
Research & Professional Practice (RP) – Research output, publications, patents, and projects.
Graduation Outcomes (GO) – Placements, higher studies, and graduation rates.
Outreach & Inclusivity (OI) – Student diversity by gender, region, and socio-economic background.
Perception (PR) – Reputation among peers, employers, and stakeholders.
On the other hand, other global systems such as QS Rankings, or Times Higher Education (THE) pay more attention to global reputation, international faculty, and research impact. NIRF focuses more on the quality of teaching, inclusivity, and the impact of local research.

Parameters | 5 categories – Teaching, Research, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach & Inclusivity, Perception | 9 categories – Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Faculty, Faculty-Student Ratio, International Faculty, International Students, Research Network, Employment Outcomes, Sustainability |
Weightage | Pays more attention to teaching and research | Pays more attention to academic reputation and citations |
Audience | Students and stakeholders in India | Global students, researchers, and universities |
Note: NIRF evaluates the performances of the Indian colleges in the country, while the QS ranks how visible and competitive they are at a global level.
The main reason behind the gap between NIRF and QS lies in the different parameters used by these ranking systems. Here is a comparison table for both the systems.
NIRF Parameters | Weightage | QS Parameters (Global) | Weightage |
Teaching, Learning & Resources | 30% | Academic Reputation | 30% |
Research & Professional Practice | 30% | Employer Reputation | 15% |
Graduation Outcomes | 20% | Faculty/Student Ratio | 10% |
Outreach & Inclusivity | 10% | Citations per Faculty | 20% |
Perception | 10% | International Faculty | 5% |
International Students | 5%
International Research Network | 5%
Employment Outcomes | 5%
Sustainability | 5% |
The main focus areas of NIRF revolve around national priorities, while the main focus areas of QS revolve around global visibility, research impact, and internationalization.

The table below shows the NIRF 2025 ranking and QS World university ranking 2026 for the top educational institutes in India.
Institution | NIRF 2025 Rank | QS 2026 Rank |
IIT Madras | 1 | 227 |

IIT Roorkee | 6 | 369 |
IIT Guwahati | 7 | 344 |
VIT | 8 | 851–900 |
As you can see, the NIRF 2025 rank of IIT Madras is #1, but it falls behind IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi globally as per the QS Rankings 2026. This highlights the gap between the national and global evaluation systems.
Following are the main reasons for the gap between NIRF ranking and QS ranking.
Global Reputation – The main parameter that QS bases its evaluation are international surveys where these top Indian educational institutions lack visibility.
Internationalization – The number of foreign students in Indian colleges like IITs, and VIT is a worrying concern pointing towards lack of internalization and affecting QS scores.
Research Impact – There is no doubt that IITs are known to produce robust publications, however, citations per faculty is very low as compared to foreign universities.
Funding & Infrastructure – Indian education institutions also lag behind foreign universities, in terms of global collaboration and infrastructure.
These are some ways by which Indian colleges can improve their ranking in the QS system.
Boost Global Collaborations – The Indian colleges can collaborate more with foreign universities
Increase International Faculty & Students – Paying more attention to conducting more exchange programs and hiring global staff is a good way to improve QS scores.
Enhance Research Quality – They must also focus on globally-cited research to increase the impact.
Strengthen Global Branding – Organize conferences, and academic networks for international researchers.
Industry Integration – Concentrate on more industry-funded projects and international internships.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Both NIRF and QS serve different purposes. While NIRF helps a student know the performance of educational institutions within India, QS shows their position globally. Hence, students must consider both these systems before deciding which university to choose.
IITs and VITs can focus more on collaborating globally, hire international faculty and attract international students, strengthen online visibility and presence and publish in reputed journals.
VIT scores well in parameters such as placements, inclusivity, and teaching that help it rank among the top 10 in NIRF ranking. On the other hand, the institute also lacks global visibility, research impact and international faculty that are important to score in QS rankings.
Indian institutions perform better in NIRF than QS because NIRF centres around India-specific performance parameters like graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and lags behind in global citations, academic reputation, and internalization.
Students choose IIT Madras because of its excellent teaching, research, and inclusivity within the country as per NIRF. The reason why it ranks lower in QS rankings is because the institution lags behind in global reputation, international faculty, citations. These are the areas where IIT Bombay or Delhi score more.
