Gender Diversity At US Top Universities

A general view is that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is a male- dominated industry, but there was no mention of department wise gender diversity in the THE ranking. Hence the following table is indicative of female-male ratio of the whole campus and not a specific department.

Universities With Higher Female: Male Ratio

Name

Female:Male Ratio

University of California, Los Angeles

56 : 44

University of California, Berkeley

52 : 48

Harvard University

51 : 49

Yale University

51 : 49

Princeton University

47 : 53

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

41 : 59

California Institute of Technology

37 : 63

Georgia Institute of Technology

34 : 66

The female-male ratio of any institute offers an insight of the institute’s diversity and also the process of any country. STEM institutes such as those mentioned in the table, where females surpass their male peers suggests progress and equality of the academic landscape in the entire country.

MIT, Stanford University and Harvard University are among the top universities for almost all subjects but the tuition fees for them are about five to seven times higher than one of the other top universities, University of California in Los Angeles. Plus there are other expenses of accommodation, fooding and others that a student needs to calculate before making a decision on the college to choose. There are also many scholarships offered to students by the university as well as the Indian government that a student can apply for.
