As per the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, the USA’s Harvard University ranks first globally for Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme. It ranks at fourth position under overall stream ranking.
Eighteen indicators in the field of learning environment, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook of the campuses are measured by THE world university ranking to evaluate an institution’s performance.
The US continues to be the top choice for Indian students even post pandemic. As per Open Doors Report 2023, this number is increasing every year. There were 268,923 students in 2022-2023 which is 35 percent higher than, 199,182 in 2021-22. The major increase, by 62.6 percent, was seen among graduate students and about 16 percent among undergraduates during the same period.

In 2022, 25.4 percent of Indian students went to the USA for education.
A total of 1,374 universities were ranked for engineering in THE World University Ranking. The US, Japan and India had maximum universities ranked in this subject. There were 139 universities from the US. The top 10 US universities are mentioned in the table below.

The tuition fee for the Electrical and Electronic engineering course is almost 50 percent higher than the Computer Science course at MIT. At University of California, Berkley the fee for Electrical and Electronics courses is over 18 percent higher than that of Computer Science courses.

Careers360 could not find data on streamwise international student pool, however, at the US universities, international students account for about 15 to 33 percent of the students on campus. Universities with high international student enrollments are recognised for their academic excellence and inclusive environment. California Institute of Technology, MIT and Georgia Institute of Technology are among the prestigious institutions attracting students from across the globe.
These universities have a good students to staff ratio, typically in the range of 5.2 to 18. At Harvard university the student-staff ratio is nine, meaning for every nine students there is one staff for them, which is a noteworthy parameter to consider while choosing a university for overseas higher education.
Universities With Highest Number of International Students
University Name | No. of Full Time Students | No. of International Students |
---|---|---|
Georgia Institute of Technology | 32,079 | 9,303 |
University of California, Berkeley | 39,991 | 8,798 |
45,783 | 7,325 | |
University of California, Los Angeles | 42,634 | 6,395 |

Yale University | 11,924 | 2,504 |
Princeton University | 7,753 | 1,783 |
California Institute of Technology | 2,240 | 739 |
A general view is that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is a male- dominated industry, but there was no mention of department wise gender diversity in the THE ranking. Hence the following table is indicative of female-male ratio of the whole campus and not a specific department.
Universities With Higher Female: Male Ratio
Name | Female:Male Ratio |
---|---|
University of California, Los Angeles | 56 : 44 |
University of California, Berkeley | 52 : 48 |
Harvard University | 51 : 49 |
Yale University | 51 : 49 |
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor | 51 : 49 |
Stanford University | 47 : 53 |
Princeton University | 47 : 53 |
Massachusetts Institute of Technology | 41 : 59 |
37 : 63 | |
Georgia Institute of Technology | 34 : 66 |
The female-male ratio of any institute offers an insight of the institute’s diversity and also the process of any country. STEM institutes such as those mentioned in the table, where females surpass their male peers suggests progress and equality of the academic landscape in the entire country.
MIT, Stanford University and Harvard University are among the top universities for almost all subjects but the tuition fees for them are about five to seven times higher than one of the other top universities, University of California in Los Angeles. Plus there are other expenses of accommodation, fooding and others that a student needs to calculate before making a decision on the college to choose. There are also many scholarships offered to students by the university as well as the Indian government that a student can apply for.
