  • Both GRE and GMAT exams are accepted by a number of business schools abroad.

  • Both tests analyse the verbal and quantitative skills of students.

  • The scores of both these tests are valid for five years.

  • Candidates can retake both these exams to get a better score.

Difference between GRE and GMAT

Both the GMAT and GRE are standardised tests used for graduate school admissions, but they have some key differences. Study abroad aspirants must know the difference between GRE and GMAT to choose the right exam that enables hassle-free entry to universities abroad.

Format: GRE is available in paper and computer formats, while the GMAT focus edition is solely computer-based. Paper-based GRE is available in locations where the computer test is unavailable. The difficulty level between the two formats also differs for CBT.

Acceptance rate: Both the new focus edition of the GMAT and GRE are highly accepted in the United States and other countries for graduate school admission. However, GRE has a greater rate of acceptance worldwide than GMAT. GMAT focus edition score reports are the more widely accepted test for MBA programmes. However, some MBA programs will also accept GRE scores.

Cost: GRE is generally slightly cheaper than the GMAT focus edition. GMAT focus edition charges USD 275 from the test-takers with an additional USD 35 for each score report. Whereas, GRE exam fee costs USD 205 in most parts of the world, with each additional score report costing USD27.

Scoring: The score range for GMAT focus edition ranges from 205-805. Whereas, for GRE it is 260-340.

Duration: The duration for GRE is 3 hours 45 minutes, whereas, GMAT focus edition test duration is only 2 hours and 15 minutes.

GMAT vs GRE- Test Sections

GMAT focus edition is composed of three major sections, namely, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. However, GRE has only three major sections: GRE Analytical Writing, GRE Verbal Reasoning, and GRE Quantitative Reasoning.

  • GMAT

The verbal reasoning section of the GMAT verbal syllabus will have 23 questions to be completed in 45 minutes. The questions will be based on three types; reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction.

Which is Better GMAT or GRE?

One of the most common questions asked by the candidates is “Which is better between GRE and GMAT?” Both GRE and GMAT exams are accepted by a number of business schools abroad. However, they differ slightly in the following aspects:

  • The cost of the GMAT focus edition exam is slightly higher than GRE. Many candidates prefer to take GRE due to its low exam cost.

  • GRE offers both paper-based and computer-based test options for candidates. GMAT exam is solely computer-based.

  • Both GRE and GMAT syllabus is composed of three major sections. However, the edition of the new data insights in the new focus edition of the GMAT exam increases the difficulty level of the exam.

GMAT and GRE Which is Easier?

The difficulty levels of GRE and GMAT depend on a candidate's academic strengths and abilities. Applicants can decide the difficulty levels of both exams by doing a GRE versus GMAT comparison before registration.

The verbal section of the GRE is comparatively more difficult than the new GMAT focus edition. For the quantitative section, the GRE is easier when compared to GMAT and test takers can even use a calculator in the GRE. There are more geometry-based questions in the GRE while the GMAT focus edition has more logic-based questions and data insights.

GRE vs GMAT: Score Validity

Scores of both exams are valid for up to 5 years.

GRE vs GMAT: Which test to take?

Which exam to take between GMAT and GRE completely depends on the candidate’s choice and strength. Candidates who want to move abroad for higher studies other than an MBA can apply for GRE. However, if candidates wish to be admitted to business schools, taking the new GMAT focus edition is a better option because it is the most widely accepted exam among business schools.

The best way to decide which test is better would be to take a free official GRE and GMAT test. Compare GMAT scores to the GMAT exam score ranges of MBA programmes. For GRE compare it with the average GRE test scores.

GRE vs GMAT: What do business schools prefer?

Most business schools make no distinction between GRE and GMAT scores for admission, they are willing to accept either of them from applicants. However, the GRE score is not accepted by every business school.

Candidates thinking on GRE vs GMAT for b-school admissions, having a few years of work experience makes taking the GMAT rather than the GRE a better option. Because it sends the message that a candidate has a clear goal of doing an MBA whereas taking the GRE indicates an intent to take up postgraduate programmes as well.

GMAT vs GRE Test: Exam Fees

The GRE exam fee in India is INR 22,550 (USD 270) including the tax. This fee is the same for the GRE general test at the test centre or home edition. For the GRE Subject test, the fee is INR 14,500 (USD 179) including taxes.

The GMAT exam fee ranges from USD 250 to USD 300 depending on the country, and the exam mode can be either online or at the test centre.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

1. Do universities prefer GMAT or GRE?

Neither is universally preferred! Most business schools accept both GRE and GMAT, valuing individual fit more than test choice. Research specific programs: some lean towards GMAT for quant emphasis, while others see GRE's broader skills as valuable. Strong scores & application package matter most, regardless of test!

2. Does Harvard prefer GRE or GMAT?

Harvard Business School **does not have a preference** between GRE and GMAT! They value your overall application and fit with their program more than the specific test you choose. Nearly 30% of their current first-year students submitted GRE scores, so both options are well-accepted. Choose the test you feel you can score best on and focus on crafting a compelling application!

3. Do MBA schools accept GRE?

Yes, most MBA schools accept GRE scores. Over 90% of business schools worldwide welcome GRE General Test scores for some or all of their MBA programs. This includes top institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton.

4. Should I do GMAT or GRE for MBA?

No one-size-fits-all! Consider:

Strengths: GRE shines in verbal & reading, GMAT in quant & data. Choose based on your skills.

Background: Business background? GMAT might feel familiar. Non-business? GRE welcomes diverse skills.

Programs: Check specific requirements. Some lean GMAT for quant focus, others favor GRE's broader skills.

5. Which is more expensive GMAT or GRE?

The GMAT is slightly more expensive than the GRE in most regions:

  • GMAT: USD275 for the online test and USD250 for the test center version (includes free score delivery to five schools).

  • GRE: USD205 for the online test and the same for the test center version (includes free score delivery to four schools).

So, the GMAT costs ~USD20 more than the GRE. However, the price difference might be negligible compared to the potential impact on your MBA application chances. Choose the test that best suits your skills and program requirements!

Dear Student,

For admittance to premier universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and CMU, your resume must be exceptionally strong.

  • GRE - on the safe side, 325+
  • GPA of at least 110 and a TOEFL score of at least 110.
  • Do as many articles as you can, attempt to participate in research activities at your college, and if at all feasible, try to obtain patents.
  • Internships: I firmly feel that internships are important. Utilize your vacation time for internships, and attempt to concentrate on professions that are research-based or pure CS.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Present Papers, Participate in GSOC and Other Coding Events, etc.
  • Do two or more projects during your undergraduate studies, preferably ones that are linked to your field of study.
  • Work Experience - This is an optional consideration, but if you spend a few years in a top product company's R&D, it might be worthwhile.
  • Put a lot of time and work crafting your SOP and make sure it accurately expresses your reasons for obtaining an MS in Computer Science.
  • Get letters of recommendation from top management at your job and from research faculty at your college—they must know you!

Even if you address all of the aforementioned criteria, there is no assurance that you will be admitted to one of the universities you have named. When you make a decision, a combination of all these criteria will be taken into account, but these 10 ideas are a fantastic place to start.

I know someone who received acceptance letters from MIT, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University for their MS and PhD programmes after scoring between 1400 and 1600 on the GRE. He applied with an excellent resume that included a 9+ GPA throughout college, two years of research in Microsoft R&D, and a few patents. Therefore, what matters is your whole profile.

I hope that helps! I wish you the best!

Now, there's another English aptitude test for the United States. It is called TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is accepted by American Universities while IELTS is accepted overseas. You can choose from these two as per your needs.
Hope this answers your query.
