SGPA full form is Semester Grade Point Average that showcases the academic score of students for a particular semester. This grading system is practised by the majority of educational institutes across the globe. SGPA provides an overall evaluation of one’s grades and performance for the entire session. It is graded on a 10-point scale and can be converted into percentages easily for further evaluation purposes. It is also important to understand that scoring an SGPA results in increasing your overall CGPA to a great extent.

How to Calculate SGPA?

There are various components that are an integral part of calculating SGPA. It consists of grade points and credit points that establish the overall SGPA of a student. The easiest way of calculating SGPA is by multiplying the grade points by credit points and adding them together to formulate a product. This product sum is then divided by the total of credit points earned in the semester. The formula for the same is given below for reference:

SGPA= Σ(Grade point of each course*Credit point of each course) / Σ Total credit points

  • Take into consideration the grades points obtained, and credits for the respective subjects of the semester to input to the SGPA calculator.

  • Multiply each grade point of a course with its respective credits to calculate the average grade points.

  • Add the sum total of all the weighted grade points received for every subject.

  • Simultaneously also add all the credits for the subjects.

  • Followed by, dividing the sum of weighted grade points by the sum of credits.

  • The results can then be generated by the SGPA calculator.

The process for the same is mentioned below for a better understanding of converting SGPA into Percentages:

  • Calculate SGPA.

  • Subtract SGPA by 0.75 and multiply by 10.

  • For example (SGPA-0.75)*10.

  • The derived answer is the required percentage.

  • For calculating the percentage for all semesters then continue the same process with the average score of all SGPAs.

SGPA Full Form in Education

To calculate SGPA, students must be aware of a few important terminologies that they will come across on their scorecards.

  • Semester: An academic degree can be divided into multiple semesters. This semester's system helps candidates to focus on a particular subject. Most universities and colleges use the semester system to organise their academic year.

  • Credit Points: What is a credit point in the result? The credit points define the measure of the study load of the candidates. Each credit point consists of 25 to 30 hours of work and it depends on the number of presentations, learning matters, and texts to read during the entire semester.

  • Grade Points: Grade points are the appraisal an individual receives based upon the subject one studies as a part of their course. These grade points help in determining the GPA of an individual after each term. These grade points will be different based on the type a college follows. These grade points can be checked from the basic grade scale below.

How to calculate CGPA?

CGPA gives the overall academic performance of a student throughout the semester or term in high school or college. It is one of the most popular forms of grading in India however, the cumulative grade point average works on a 10-point scale which is quite contrary to the popular US-based GPA system of 4 4-point scale. Moreover, CGPA also stands in contrast with SGPA as the latter deals with just a single semester’s grades whereas the former includes all the successive semesters. The formula for calculating CGPA is simple one needs to multiply the grade points with their credit points for that particular subject and divide it with the sum total of all the credits in that semester.
