US Colleges Urge International Students to Return to Campus Ahead of Trump’s Inauguration

As Donald Trump is all set to take the oath on January 20th as the 47th President of the United States, many American universities have advised international students and their employees to return from their winter breaks before the oath date.

This travel advisory is based on fears of potential travel bans that may come into effect with the new administration and disrupt the travel and visa processes as he announced that he will be signing executive orders on economy and immigration policies on his first day as president.

Why are Colleges Issuing Advisory

Universities have begun taking proactive steps as according to them, Trump promises strict immigration policies along with the possibility of the travel ban. Because of this uncertainty, foreign students, especially those coming in on F-1 or J-1 visas are quite disturbed.

The travel advisory mainly targets students and employees travelling abroad during the holiday season, asking them to take precautionary steps and return to the US before 20th January 2025. The main reason universities are issuing these advisories is because they want to avoid complications that may come in their way post-inauguration.

MIT's Associate Dean David Elwell advised international students to carefully plan their travel given the uncertainty of the transitions. He warned that in any case, visa processing will take some time, and being outside the US during the introduction of new policies is not a risk that should be taken.

The University of Massachusetts issued a detailed advisory for international students stating, “Given that a new presidential administration can enact policies on their first day in office and based on previous experience with travel bans in 2017, this advisory is made out of an abundance of caution”.

The Importance of International Students

International students play a major role in the US education system. A recent report on International Educational Exchange by Open Doors 2024 mentioned that there are 1.1 million international students in the US.

According to another data from the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute of International Education, 54% of the international students in the US are from India and China.

In the year 2023-2024, India surpassed China by showing a 23% increase from the previous year. A total of 331,602 Indian students were enrolled in American institutions proving that the US is the top study-abroad destination for Indians.

However, the political climate in the US has become a concern for international students and has left uncertainty about the future of the country.

University Measures to Support Students Abroad

Universities have been actively guiding so that there is no chaos among the students abroad.

Providing Legal Aid: Universities are partnering with immigration lawyers to answer any student queries and to assist with documents.

Informative Sessions: Universities are hosting webinars and workshops to inform students about travel and visa updates.

Communications: Universities are using different mediums like emails and advisories to keep students updated about any changes.

Impact of Immigration Policies on Study Abroad

These policies amid Trump’s presidency have raised several questions on the long-term impact on international students. These economic and immigration policies could discourage international students, especially those from India and China.

In recent years, countries like Canada, UK and Australia have given tough competition to US in terms of welcoming international students. These changes in policies might challenge the US's dominance as a major preferred study-abroad destination.

There are many ways to choose your university such as fees, the ranking of the university, which state it is located and scholarships. My suggestion is to choose your research focus and write academic papers. In the US, PhD in Commerce admission into the university depends on what you want to study (your area of research) and your already completed research papers. You can begin your research by searching online for US universities offering PhD in Business Administration.
