Universities in the US are busy advising their staff and international students to return to their respective campuses before the newly-elected president Donald Trump’ takes office in January. As per reports of the BBC, Trump during the presidential election had pledged to implement the largest deportation operation in the pages of US history with the support of the US military.

Reportedly, over 400,000 students enrolled in different universities in the United States of America do not have proper documentation. Trump, a Republican, plans to actualize the largest deportation operation with his officials. Various officials under the administration of Donald Trump will implement holding facilities for such undocumented immigrants, which is expected to be huge. All of those international students will be on the deportation list.

Rising anxiety among International students

“All international students are worried right now," says Chloe East, professor at the University of Colorado Denver, to BBC.

Several universities in the US reported that international students are overwhelmed and uncertain about their future amid Trump's crackdown on mass deportation. Many students are worried that they would be allowed to study in US or not.

University Travel Advisories and Precautions

Last year, the US reported the highest number of international students (OPT drove the number of international students), whereas this year the enrolment number has been flat in comparison to the previous year. India leads the race with 3.31 Lakh students, beating China.

To mitigate the uncertainties over Trump's immigration crackdown, in November 2024, the Massachusetts University issued a travel advisory for their staff and international students, advising them "to strongly consider" returning the campuses before the president's inauguration on January 20, 2025.

This advisory pointed towards the unforeseen travel disruptions due to new immigration policies, advising everyone to not delay returning back to their respective campuses. “Given that it is possible for a newly elected presidential administration to enact new policies on the first day of their service, and having experienced the travel bans in 2017, we are issuing this advisory to help our staff and students to avoid any travel disruptions," says the university.

Several other US universities, such as Wesleyan University, have also issued similar advisories. At Yale University, the Office of International Students and Scholars has hosted a webinar addressing concerns about the possible changes that can be made to the existing immigration policy under the presidency of the newly elected President, Donald Trump.

How has Trump reacted to immigration in the past?

During his first term, President Trump issued an executive order that prohibited entry of nationals from several countries, predominantly Muslim, and from North Korea and Venezuela. He also brought measures to curtail student visas and enhanced border security. Many international students, especially those from countries like China, will live in fear of being deported and are in deep worry over their future in the US in Trump's second term.

Anxiety among International Students in the US

Professor East is of the view that Asia students, especially those Chinese, are worried about their future based on the current poor relationship between the US and China during Trump's regime.

For example, there is the student, a Japanese Aoi Maeda, stating concern over political climate shift: "I graduate in May 2026, but as now that administration is going to be a little dangerous, and so things go well in the hopes become quite low for me.". Trump claims that he is only interested in keeping illegal immigrants out of the country, but he changes the goals a lot. I feel like international students with visas might get affected, and it will become easier to deport us."

Undocumented International Students in US Higher Education

According to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, 408,000 undocumented students are currently enrolled in US higher education, which amounts to about 1.9% of all postsecondary students. Such students are the most vulnerable to changes in immigration laws, and most fear that stricter regulations could disrupt their education and future in the US.

With Trump's presidency fast approaching, institutions are trying to take preemptive steps for supporting their international communities in a challenging and uncertain environment. For most international students, faculty, and staff members, uncertainty over US immigration policies continues to be one of the biggest sources of stress.
