A large number of students are unable to start their undergraduate education journeys in institutions that were their first priority or dream choice. This happens due to a plethora of reasons ranging from the high level of competitiveness in freshman admissions for top universities, limited opportunities and exposure to profile building in high school, or the presence of outstanding circumstances that prevent students from achieving their full potential with respect to undergraduate education destinations.
Whilst in most situations and countries, students have to continue their degree in the university they join or start their degree from scratch in a more prestigious school in the following year; universities in the United States allow students to transfer from one university to another through a student’s undergraduate journey.
It must be noted that transfer admissions are different from combined degrees (a degree in which a student attends two or more universities to complete undergraduate coursework) or semesters/years abroad (where a student studies a semester/year in another university in a foreign country whilst still being enrolled in their home university). Transfer admissions imply permanently changing a student’s academic affiliation from one university to another.

Here are a few features of transfer admissions that students must know about.
Most universities allow students to transfer only up till the end of their second year of coursework. Now, given that undergraduate degrees in the United States are 4-year-long courses, a student must study at least two years in the university that they are transferring to. There are generally three windows for a transfer—
Each of these transfer windows has different deadlines and requirements. Moreover, not all universities have admissions open across all these windows. It is common for most universities, however, to accept transfer students at the end of their first and second years and start their coursework in the September of the second (Sophomore) or third (Junior) years respectively.
One of the best things about transfer admissions is that the coursework that a student has completed in their first university continues to be relevant and contributes to the awarding of an undergraduate degree by their second/destination university. This transfer of coursework is facilitated by college credits. College credit is a variably designated unit of education. When a student transfers to a new university, the new university checks the credits the student has already earned and determines their academic status. The new university then advises the student on what additional credits they need to earn to complete their degree and suggests which courses they can take based on their academic interests and intended major.

Transfer admission deadlines correspond to the window that a student is seeking to transfer into. Applications are to be completed by students in the semester previous to their intended semester of entry. Students who target the Fall (September) intake must complete their applications between February to April, depending on the deadline of the university. Those who target Winter (January) in their second year have deadlines between October and November of their second year. Transfer admission applications are fairly comprehensive processes that require students to procure several documents and compile a wide range of essays. This typically takes about 1-2 months and hence it is prudent for students to start preparing for their transfer admissions at the very beginning of the semester in which they seek to submit applications.
Transfer admissions require students to submit all documents required during freshman admissions and beyond. This implies that students must secure and submit important documents from their high school such as the year end report, counsellor recommendation, and beyond. More importantly, students must prepare and collate additional documentation that demonstrates their experience during their time at their first university.

Coursework Summary | A detailed description of the coursework completed is required which must be validated by each instructor. This is imperative in enabling a streamlined assessment of college credit.
Letter Of Recommendation | Letters of recommendation are required from at least two instructors that the student has studied under, with these documents being very strong determinants of admissions outcomes.

Extra Curricular Activities | Students are required to submit a detailed list of extracurricular activities completed by them in high school and college in addition to academic course descriptions.
Essays | There is a strong emphasis on submitting high-quality essays. Similar to undergraduate applications—essays can be very varied. Transfer students, in their essays, must include a very strong justification for their reason for transfer, specifically to the school they are applying to. This justification must be validated through their activities and experiences described in their application.
Students submit their transfer applications through the Common Application Portal or the Coalition Application Portal. Some universities, however, may have a different individual portal for transfer applications.
Similar to undergraduate admissions in the United States, student profiles play a very important role in determining the outcomes of transfer admissions. The best way to shape one’s profile for transfer admissions is by demonstrating a continuous and positive desire to seek a new kind of learning. Students must show that they have undertaken all possible opportunities in their present universities to seek this kind of learning – by doing research projects and authoring papers, working for social development with community-oriented clubs, and by taking on internships in the city that they are based in. This pursuit and effort must be linked with similar opportunities present in the target university through essays.
