About BA Classical Studies and English Literature

BA Classical Studies and English Literature is offered by the Department of English Literature, University of Reading, England. BA Classical Studies and English Literature is a combined course comprehensively designed by the University of Reading (UK) for the students interested in studying classical literature, history and culture of ancient civilizations: their influence on the modern world; literary studies which are less familiar like children’s literature, publishing and the history of literature and politics of literature. 

The course BA Classical Studies and English Literature is a 3-year course. The first year consists of 5 compulsory modules and 5 optional modules. The second year consists of 23 optional modules while the third year consists of 21 optional modules. The students are encouraged to learn in small-groups in a friendly and supportive environment. Also, scholarships in UK are available for students for independent travel to have the direct experience of ancient sites and gain knowledge about them. As part of the degree, students are also trained in careers and employability in first and second years.

Admission and Application

Before applying to the BA Classical Studies and English Literature, applicants must read the eligibility criteria carefully and then head to the University of Reading admission portal.   • Then the applicants must go to the official website of UCAS at www.ucas.com, the National Admission Service of the UK, to register for applying to the course.

  • Search the UCAS code for University of Reading i.e. R12 and UCAS code for BA Classical Studies and English Literature i.e. QQ38.

  • Fill all the personal details, educational qualifications, references and the other things asked in the application.

  • A personal statement must be written with the application.

  • Once the application is filled carefully and accurately with all the required information like qualifications, personal statement and references, submit it.

  • The submitted application is then sent to the University’s Admission Office by UCAS for review. 

  • The applicant may be called for a college interview or portfolio submission if applicable.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria UK applicants and applicants from countries other than the UK are different. The minimum requirements for admission to BA Classical Studies and English Literature programme at University of Reading for UK applicants are as follows:

  • Typical Offer: The applicants must have A-levels grades of BBB including grade B in A level English Literature or related subjects. The related subjects include English Language, English Language and Literature, Drama and Theatre Studies, Creative Writing.  

OR

  • International Baccalaureate: The applicants must have 30 points overall including 5 in English at higher level.

OR

  • Extended Project Qualification: Achievement in EPQ is accepted as part of a formal offer as it provides excellent preparation to students for University study.

OR

  • BTEC Extended Diploma: The applicants must hold a DDM grade in BTEC Extended Diploma in modules comparable to subject specific requirements.

The minimum requirements for the applicants from India are as follows:

  • The applicants must have a Higher Secondary School Certificate(Class 12) with average score range of 70-83%  depending on the overall grade profile. 

OR

  • The applicants who do not meet the requirements can apply for the International Foundation Programme. The only requirement is that the applicants must have secured 55% average marks in 10th standard or scores lower than entry requirements for undergraduate programmes in 12th standard. 

English Language Requirements for International Students- 

  • The applicants must have scored 7.0 overall in IELTS with each component score of 6.0 or more.
