About M.Sc Software Engineering with Placement Year

M.Sc Software Engineering with a Placement Year is a comprehensively designed course by School of Computer Science and Mathematics of Kingston University(London) for the students wishing to study software development at advanced level. In the modern world, there are many issues in industry and commerce which are related to software development. In this programme, the students will get an advanced knowledge of the software development cycle. 

M.Sc Software Engineering with a Placement Year consists of an induction programme, a project dissertation, three core modules and two optional modules. The three core modules are Agile Project Development, Software Architectures and Programming Models and Software Quality Engineering while the two optional modules include User Experience Design (Systems) and Applied Data Programming. The two optional modules are taught only when there is sufficient number of students demanding for the modules. The students at the end of this programme will be able to plan and implement systems development projects which will cater customer needs and incorporate software solutions into the business environment. They will also gain skills like problem solving and organisation; data collation, review and synopsis; communication (oral, written and electronic); time management; and cooperation and teamwork. The teaching methods include context driven lectures, project-based learning, studio practices and assisting in lab sessions and seminars under the guidance of module leaders.

Kingston University also provides an option of a Placement Year with this programme which is available for both home and international students. The placement year provides students with priceless work experience and skills which an employer looks for in a candidate. 

Guided independent study facilities are also provided by the School of Computer Science and Mathematics of Kingston University(London) and supported by facilities like online resources, the library and CANVAS, the online virtual learning platform. The students of this programme are assessed on the basis of tests or exams, presentations and performance and coursework like essays, reports, self-assessment, portfolios, dissertation. Admission and Application

The applicants must read all the information and instructions regarding the course which they are applying for on the University’s official website. After that, the applicants must fill the online application and submit it with all the supporting documents. They must cross-check all the details filled in the application before submitting it.

How To Apply for M.Sc Software Engineering with a Placement Year 

  • First, the applicants must go to the official course page of the programme they are applying for at  www.kingston.ac.uk under 'Postgraduate Courses'.

  • Then, the applicants must head to the ‘Apply for This Course’ section on the course page. Here, the applicants must choose the mode of attendance and start date of the programme to click the ‘Apply Now’ in front of the option chosen. 

  • Then the applicants must register themselves and create their own account for applying with a username and its password.

  • Fill the application form carefully and submit it along with all the required documents. 

  • The submitted application is then assessed by the postgraduate Admission tutor. If the admission tutor is not satisfied with the application, he/she may ask the applicant for further information or for attending an interview. 

  • The applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements may be asked for a portfolio by the admission tutor. The portfolio must be uploaded to the Kingston University OSIS account.

  • After assessing the applications carefully, the final decision regarding the admission to the programme gets communicated to the applicants.

Eligibility

To apply for the M.Sc Software Engineering with a Placement Year programme, the minimum entry requirements must be met by the applicants. There are separate eligibility criteria for the UK applicants and applicants from other countries. Also, applicants from  the UK and major English-speaking countries need not to take English Language Proficiency Tests to prove their English proficiency. However, applicants from other countries must meet the eligibility criteria of the English language. In case,applicants from other countries do not meet the English language criteria, they can take admission into a pre-sessional English language course of Kingston University. 

Minimum requirements for UK applicants

  • The applicants must hold 2:2 or above honours degree or equivalent in information technology/computing science/software engineering subject.

  • The applicants must have considerable relevant work experience. For example, 2 years work experience as a programmer.

Minimum Requirements for Indian applicants

  • The applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline with minimum CGPA 6.0 out of 10.

English Language Minimum Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • The applicants must have secured an overall score of 6.5 with no element below 6.0 in IELTS Academic test.
