About MA Intercultural Communication

Canterbury Christ Church University offers one-year full-time M.A. Intercultural Communication and M.A. Intercultural Communication Extended Masters programme. The university also offers two-year part-time M.A. Intercultural Communication programme. The programme comprises global communication and develops expertise in intercultural interaction and research intercultural communication. M.A. Intercultural Communication students can pursue their career in media, publishing, advertising and human resources and translation. There are diverse professional fields like police and the legal profession, armed forces in peace keeping roles, education, health, policy, immigration services, NGOs and Not for Profit Organisations operating across the world for the graduates of M.A. Intercultural Communication.

Candidates who wish to pursue their career in communication-oriented professions can opt for this programme. Doctoral research in the field of communication is also available. M.A. Intercultural Communication programme will help learn communicating in globalised world and will benefit the working lives and in career advancement. M.A. Intercultural Communication programme comprises six modules and a dissertation. In full-time M.A. Intercultural Communication programme, there are three trimesters. Students will study three modules in first two trimesters. In trimester 3, students have to write a dissertation. In part-time M.A. Intercultural Communication programme, there are three trimesters each in two years. 

Year 1: 2 modules in first two trimesters and 1 module in the third trimester.

Year 2: 1 module in first trimester and have to write dissertation in the last two trimesters.

  • Contemporary issues in applied linguistics

  • Investigating language systems

  • Research methods

  • Intercultural communication: from theory to practice

M.A. Intercultural Communication programme involves lectures, seminars, group work, practical work, a virtual learning environment, guided independent study and individual and small-group tutorials. The M.A. Intercultural Communication programme follows a flipped classroom approach, where critical discussion and practical group activities are conducted during class time. Throughout the programme, students will be assessed through self assessment, peer assessment, course work, portfolio work, essays, reports and presentations. In the final trimester students have to write a 15,000 word dissertation in the field of intercultural communication. Students can choose the topic of dissertation of their own choice. In M.A. Intercultural Communication programme, there is no any final exam.

Eligibility

Canterbury Christ Church University offers M.A. Intercultural Communication as postgraduate taught programme. Candidates have to fulfill the eligibility criteria before admission to the M.A. Intercultural Communication programme at Canterbury Christ Church University. In order to meet the eligibility criteria, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree of three years duration in the relevant streams. Professional degree of four years is also accepted. International students must show English proficiency proof. Canterbury Christ Church University accepts scores of IELTS for English language requirements. 

  • Interview

  • For international students (India)- 

  1. Bachelor of Arts/Science/Commerce degree of at least 3 years duration or Professional Degree (4 years+)

  2. 2:1 with first class degree or equivalent or 2:2 with high second class degree, 55% or equivalent

  • English language requirements-

  1. IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in writing and no less than 5.5 in all other bands or equivalent

  2. IELTS requirements are waived for the following qualifications:

  • 65% in standard XII CBSE and ISC English

  • 70% in standard XII English under the state boards of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala

  • Medium of instruction is not accepted
