About M.Sc Water Science, Policy and Management

The M.Sc in Water Science, Policy and Management program is designed to prepare future water professionals with the necessary skills to contribute significantly to sustainable water management. This includes addressing the complex issues related to water use for ecosystems, food, energy, economic growth, and human consumption.

The course is structured into three main areas of focus: water science, water and society, and water management.

The water science component aims to develop knowledge and understanding of physical, chemical, ecological, and epidemiological aspects of water science in various environments, including temperate, tropical, and semi-arid zones. It covers fundamental processes in each subject area, as well as the interactions that occur throughout the hydrological cycle. Additionally, it explores the role of society in modifying natural hydrological processes and ecosystem function, and the resulting impact on health.

The water and society component examines how power dynamics, interests, and knowledge influence decision-making in relation to water. This is illustrated through institutional, socio-economic, and policy analysis. Topics covered include water security, governance, law and regulation, economics, finance, access, ownership and rights, development, climate change, water risks, and the interactions between the state and civil society within diverse political, cultural, social, and economic contexts.

The water management component integrates the knowledge and understanding gained from the other thematic areas to better equip students in addressing the significant challenges faced in water management. Geographic case studies are used to compare the trade-offs between scientific knowledge and societal needs in different contexts. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with experts from various perspectives and areas of expertise, gaining insights into the challenges encountered by water managers.
