About M.Sc Research - Mathematics

The M.Sc by Research is an advanced research degree that offers individuals the chance to look into a project extensively and produce a thesis that contributes significantly to the field. Unlike a Doctorate degree, the research project for an M.Sc by Research is designed to be completed in a shorter time-frame. It should be noted that this degree is not meant to serve as an initial step towards a D.Phil, but rather as an alternative to it. Only a few students choose to pursue an M.Sc by Research, usually due to constraints on time or funding.

The department conducts research in a wide range of mathematical disciplines, which includes subject areas like

  • Algebra (primarily group theory and representation theory)
  • Topology
  • Geometry
  • Mathematical biology and ecology
  • Industrial and applied mathematics (including fluid and solid mechanics, geo-sciences, mathematical physiology, methodologies, and networks)
  • Numerical analysis
