About M.Phil Russian and East European Studies
The M.Phil program in Russian and East European Studies is a two-year program designed for graduates who wish to enhance their understanding and knowledge of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Through interdisciplinary study in fields such as history, economics, politics, international relations, and sociology, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the region.
During the first year, students will take three core courses, in addition to the Research Methods for Area Studies and Russian Language:
- History of Russia, the USSR, and Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century;
- Contemporary Russian and East European Studies Part 1: Politics and international relations, which covers topics related to politics, security, and international relations in Russia and Eastern Europe;
- Contemporary Russian and East European Studies Part 2: Sociology and economics, which explores the economics and sociology of the region.
In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialize further by selecting two option courses from a list of available options for that academic year. Some of the available option courses include-
- Central Asia and the South Caucasus,
- Islam in the USSR, Ideology and Popular Culture,
- Illiberalism in Central and Eastern Europe,
- Russian International Relations and Foreign Policy,
- Post-Communist Cultures of Corruption, Practices, Institutions, Networks,
- South East Europe Politics and European Intervention.

Admission and Application
For applying to the University of Oxford, students need to follow the procedure discussed below-
- Students need to apply to the University of Oxford through the online UCAS application form.
- While filling the UCAS application form, students will need to enter their education details, personal details, letters of reference. In addition to that, applicants also need to write a personal statement explaining why they have chosen the course they have applied for.

- Additionally, students also might have to clear few exams before getting admissions to the University of Oxford. Also, Oxford requires submission of a written work for offering admissions to many of its courses.
