The M.Phil in Modern South Asian Studies is a 21-month master's program that is taught and jointly offered by the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies and the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. It provides a comprehensive study of the region, which has a rich historical background and complex societies in the present day. Students can choose between two routes: an intensive language route or a non-language route, both of which culminate in a significant thesis.
This M.Phil program is a unique opportunity to benefit from Oxford's extensive expertise in South Asia. Students will have access to teaching and expert supervision from various departments in the Social Sciences and Humanities Divisions. The program offers rigorous training in research methods through specialized modules and provides the option to receive language training in Hindi, Urdu, Classical Hindi/Hindavi, Persian, or other languages.
Students have the flexibility to focus on exploring the social, economic, and political achievements and challenges of the present-day states in South Asia, as well as the interconnections between democratic and developmental successes and failures. Alternatively, students can also choose to broaden their scope and study the states and societies of the subcontinent over the past five hundred years.
For applying to the University of Oxford, students need to follow the procedure discussed below-
