This course offers a comprehensive study of art and architecture from various regions of the world, spanning from ancient times to the present day. The objective is to promote a broad and profound comprehension of art and architecture, while aiding in the development of visual literacy, awareness, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
During the initial year, the course will provide students with a general overview of the history, creation, and significance of art and architecture. Special attention will be given to the architecture found in Cambridge, as well as the collections housed in the Colleges, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and Kettle's Yard. Topics covered will range from the art of Ancient Egypt to contemporary installation art, encompassing significant examples from ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and modern eras, as well as exploring the arts and architecture of Asia, Africa, and South America.
In the subsequent year, students will deepen their knowledge and understanding by focusing on specific topics, delving into them with greater detail such as Approaches to the History of Art and Architecture, Global Renaissance, Rubens, Florence 4D, British Architecture, Paris 1715-1815, Art and Architecture in Medieval Jerusalem, Russian Art, Contemporary Latin-American Art, and Chinese Art and Visual Culture.
In the last year, students will study a compulsory paper (The Display of Art), special subjects, and one dissertation comprising of 9,000 words.
