The University of Amsterdam (UVA) was initially founded as the Athenaeum Illustre on 8 January 1632. Later, it was given recognition as an institution of higher education and received the status of the University of Amsterdam. UVA soon gained the status of the second-largest university in the Netherlands in the academic year 1950-1951 with 7100 students. The University now offers education to over 34,000 students and has more than 3,000 Ph.D. researchers, 6,000 staff, and over a hundred different nationalities.
