About American University of Antigua

Located on the eastern Caribbean island of Antigua, American University of Antigua was founded in 2004. The University is one of the Caribbean medical schools with the necessary accreditations allowing its graduates to obtain licensure throughout the United States and Canada. It also is recognized by the Medical council of India in addition to recognition by the Medical Board of California and approval by the New York State Education Department. Other accreditations include Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), UK’s General Medical Council (GMC). 

AUA graduates are eligible to participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS)

AUA’s Emergency Medical Training Center (EMTC) is an official National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) centre. AUA is also a member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) as well as the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)

It offers courses in Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, MD in Global Health and a BHHS degree in addition to AICASA Accelerated Pre-Med Program which offers qualified high school graduates the opportunity to complete medical school prerequisites in less than two years.

How to apply:

•    Fill the AUA application form 

•    Pay a non-refundable application fee of US $75.00

Documents to be submitted:

•    Personal statement: This must be typed with 1.5-line spacing and no less than one page and no more than two pages in length explaining why the applicant is pursuing a career in medicine, what makes them a potential asset to AUA. It is advisable to include any significant accomplishments or additional information that would be useful to the Admissions Committee in evaluating the application.

•    Résumé or Curriculum Vitae

•    All official transcripts from each undergraduate, graduate, medical, and/or professional school attended by the applicant to be mailed directly from the institution to AUA’s New York office or through the school’s official transcript service.

•    Two letters of recommendation with at least one being an academic letter of recommendation from a science professor who has taught the applicant and is acquainted with the applicant’s academic ability. Applicants who have not taken a science class in two or more years may send a second professional letter in place of the academic letter. This can be from a non-science professor or an employer, medical colleague, or another professional who can attest to the applicant’s character, academic, or work abilities.

•    Passport-sized photo

•    Note: Any unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the application tracker for review

Information for Indian Students:

Pre-med Program: AUA College of Medicine is a division of Manipal Global Education Services. Qualified students who complete premedical coursework at Manipal University in Manipal or American International College of Arts and Sciences – Antigua (AICASA) are guaranteed acceptance into AUA College of Medicine.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is a 4.5-year program consisting of two years of Basic Sciences coursework on the AUA College of Medicine campus in Antigua and 84 weeks of study in the Clinical Sciences at teaching hospitals throughout the United States where students complete their core and elective rotations. Rotations are also available in Canada and India.

Candidates may require TOEFL or IELTS test score (if requested) – The current overall cutoff score for the TOEFL is 95 (Internet-based total, or its equivalent on the Computer-based or Paper-based versions); and current overall cutoff score for the IELTS is 7.0 (overall band score).

Scholarships for Indian Students:

Award Amount : $96,500 scholarship broken down as follows:

•    $10,000 scholarship with $2,500 awarded per semester during the 4 semester AICASA pre-med program. 

•    $47,500 scholarship with $9,500 awarded per semester of the 5 basic science semesters of AUA College of Medicine MD program.

•    $39,000 scholarship with $7,800 awarded per semester of the 5 clinical science semesters of AUA College of Medicine MD program.

Note: This scholarship does not include room, board, transportation, or education supplies

Eligibility Requirements for scholarship

 Proof of residency in India (no older than two months from the application date), a copy of their passport, and a one-page personal statement indicating why they should be considered for the scholarship. Students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress each semester to continue eligibility

Note: Applicants who have taken college-level coursework in the United States or Canada are ineligible for this scholarship.

Hostel

Boys Hostel

Housing options available on a first deposited, first-served basis. Each student assigned to University approved housing will be charged a $1,000 Housing Damage Deposit (HDD), which will be due, with rent, at the beginning of the term. At the end of the term, after students move out and turn in their keys, and after inspections have been completed of all vacated units (Please allow 6-8 weeks post move out) HDDs will be credited back to the student’s housing account. Any resultant credit balance will then be eligible for a refund. AUA defines single as bedrooms occupied by one person. Double as bedrooms occupied by two persons. All AUA-selected housing includes: • Complimentary weekly housekeeping services • All units are fully furnished • Kitchens are supplied with modern appliances and some utensils • All units have TVs • All units are air-conditioned • All electrical outlets are 110V AC except Cortsland, which is 220V • Cable TV and internet is available in all facilities for a fee arranged with the service provider by the student unless specifically stated to the contrary Utilities, electricity, and water charges are billed to the student by the Bursar. All AUA-selected housing does not include: • Linens. Students need to bring their own linens including pillows. Most bedding is queen size, but please confirm this with your New Student Coordinator when you receive your housing assignment. • Towels. Students need to bring their own towels. Students may choose to purchase personal property insurance from their preferred insurance provider. Housing is provided exclusively for students. Family, friends, or any other visitors are not permitted to reside for any period of time in University-sponsored housing. Please plan accordingly to have guests make plans to stay in a hotel if they come to visit. AUA’s housing just got even nicer! Our brand-new, on-campus apartments are just a three-minute walk to class and are fully furnished. Classrooms

The classroom isn’t the only pivotal place to shape tomorrow’s physicians. American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine has student resources available to enhance their medical education and on campus experience. Learn more about AUA’s student resources.

Library

The AUA Library provides 800 seating spaces and is open seven days a week. Each space is closed for one hour a day to allow for cleaning. To accommodate different study needs, areas within the library are designated as ultra-quiet study, soft-voice spaces, and collaboration areas. Wi-Fi is available throughout the library. Desktop computers and both color and black-and-white printers, are found on the 2nd floor. Multiple print copies of required textbooks are available in the Library from the public service desk, both in the reserve and the circulating collections. Since all curriculum needs are covered by the AUA Library collections, no books are available for purchase at AUA. To promote self-directed learning, faculty and students have continuing access to textbooks and biomedical ebooks, databases, clinical knowledge-bases, and ejournals. These are available in the library, in the classroom, on clinical rotations, and at home: in short, available anywhere. In addition, the library houses a collection of required textbooks, audio-visual materials, and other biomedical books. Featured Resources Include: eBook collections: ClinicalKey, AccessMedicine, and LWW Health Library Clinical Knowledge-bases: UpToDate, DynaMed Specialized databases: Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination, Acland’s Visual Atlas of the Human Body, A.D.A.M. All of these information resources including textbooks that are needed for courses at the AUA College of Medicine are available to students outside of the AUA Library through the Blackboard course management system as well.

Sports

Studying is crucial to your success as a medical student, but maintaining a healthy work life balance is essential to your success as a physician. That’s why American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine has athletic fields and recreational facilities available to give our students the break they need. Whether it’s team sports or working out, find a way to play. Athletic fields are ready for soccer, beach volleyball, flag football, cricket, ultimate frisbee, and other sports. Tennis and basketball courts provide an outlet for your competitive spirit. The International Cricket Association has approved AUA’s cricket field for practice matches. AUA’s selection of athletic fields gives every student the opportunity to stay fit and interact with one another by engaging in a variety of recreational activities.

Gym

Your body’s health affects your mind’s health. Whether to take the edge off or to hone it again, AUA provides a fitness center fully equipped with treadmills, exercise machines, yoga mats, and weights. There are showers and changing rooms available as well. Access is free for all AUA students.

This 400-seat outdoor amphitheater provides a space for lectures, concerts, and ceremonies.

Cafeteria

AUA’s food court provides a variety of healthy, wholesome options to keep you energized and focused throughout the day. Here you can find anything from Subway® sandwiches to Mama Lolly’s, a local favorite best known for its vegetarian dishes. Whether it’s gelato, salad, or roti, the Food Court has something for you.

Medical/Hospital

AUA students, faculty, and staff can use the on campus health clinic for their medical needs. The clinic demonstrates the institution’s commitment to the welfare of the AUA community by providing convenient access to quality medical care. The clinic provides: counseling services, routine medical care and screenings, vaccinations, blood tests, and electrocardiograms.
