The IELTS speaking test assess the speaking fluency of the candidate and is conducted as a face to face in person interview kind of meeting. Whether you attempt a paper based IELTS exam or computer based IELTS exam, the speaking format and the way it is conducted remains the same. This IELTS speaking section is divided into three sections and the flow is easy to constructive speaking and the ability to have discussion over a topic is the basic assessing matrix. PARTS OF IELTS SPEAKING TEST

Part 1 – Introduction and Interview

Overview

At the initial stage, the candidate will be called in and the basic introduction starts with asking the candidates name and his passport number. Post this, the candidate is asked with few general questions which are very basic, here the candidate must give answers with reasons keeping in mind that the length of each answer should neither be too long nor a one-word answer.


Remember that the IELTS Speaking section Part- 1 is not more than 5 minutes

What skills are involved?

At this stage, the candidate’s confidence and fluency is judged followed by the understanding level of individuals language. Hence, the candidate must give accurate responses with proper reasons.

Part 2 – Cue Card Round

Overview

This is one of the important parts of the IELTS speaking section, the candidate is given a topic to speak on for two minutes. As the candidate transits from part 1 to 2, the candidate is given a rough paper and pencil, the examiner then shares the question card containing the topic to be elaborated and also its supporting points that need to be answered. Here the candidate is given one-minute time to prepare and then speak for around 2 minutes. The candidate can prepare on the given topic and write down certain keywords on the paper and can use the same notes while speaking for 2 minutes.


Remember that the examiner may stop you in between 1-2 minutes while you are answering the cue card.

What skills are required?

This section will particularly judge the natural flow of the language a candidate has. Also, if the candidate was able to be coherent and be confident in expressing his/her thoughts and feelings.

Part 3 – Discussion

Overview

In this section of IELTS speaking, the examiner will ask certain question which are related to the topic of the cue card and will engage the candidate in a kind of discussion, the examiner here expects the answers to be in detail and with proper reasons and confidence of the candidate. There should be free flow of information, thoughts and expressions.


This section will normally last for 6-7 minutes.

What skills are required?

The ability to express thoughts and share opinions with a natural flow of language will help in scoring high bands, the candidate should maintain fluency and confidence level while giving reasons and the argumentative points should be put forward in a positive manner.

MARKING SCHEME OF IELTS SPEAKING SECTION

The IELTS speaking modules evaluates the candidates on the basis of fluency in English language, grammar accuracy and the natural ability of articulating ideas, expressions and sharing of views and thoughts along with right pronunciation and maintaining coherence while speaking in length. In addition, usage of lexical resources is an added advantage.

Fluency and coherence is the ability of the candidate to speak in length naturally without using fillers and a lot of pauses. Thinking and speaking, focusing more on grammar and doing lot of correction in it should be avoided. Instead the candidate should speak in a structured manner maintain a natural pace of language. The lexical resources are the vocabulary words the candidate uses to express his language knowledge. Using idiomatic expressions in a natural way helps one to achieve a good band score. PART-WISE ANALYSIS OF THE IELTS SPEAKING SECTION

PART - 1: INTRODUCTION AND QUESTIONS ON FAMILIAR TOPICS

Part 1 is the initial part of the IELTS speaking section and as discussed above it is a short 5 minute general talk between the examiner and the student wherein the student is asked basic questions about every day routine or life and the student is expected to give relevant answers in a proper sentence, the candidate should give a reason to his answer.

It is advised that candidates speak with confidence without stuttering or stammering too much because this might make the student less confident and more likely to commit mistakes. PART - 3:TWO-WAY DISCUSSION

After the part 2 of the IELTS speaking section concludes, the part 3 commences immediately. The examiner asks for the notes and task card back before this section starts. In the third part of the speaking test, a few general questions based on what the candidate spoke in the second part of the assessment. The type of questions include reasoning questions like why, why not, analogy7 questions such as comparison between entities, questions involving predictions, undertaking questions from a particular situation etc. The candidate is advised to undergo a lot of IELTS speaking practice to ace the third part of the IELTS speaking test.

High band score:

The students should notice the way the candidate in the audio is giving reasons to her answer and expresses her thoughts, the candidate should not be in a hurry while answering and must be patient enough to listen carefully and give a detailed answer.
