IELTS writing practice test 6

In the IELTS Writing section, candidates face two different question types. The initial task involves data interpretation, where candidates are tasked with describing a bar graph, pie chart, line chart, or process diagram within a 20-minute time limit, and a word limit of 150 words. The second task is an essay question, requiring candidates to draft a 250-word essay in 40 minutes, resulting in a total test duration of 60 minutes. IELTS writing task 1 overview

IELTS writing task 1 pie charts answers

The above pie chart shows the percentage of modes of transport preferred by commutators in the UK in 2004 and 2009 for both study and work purposes.

After going through the pie chart, we can realise that there is a substantial decrease of 23% in the percentage of people who travel by car in 2009 as compared to 2004. It can also be noticed that all other modes of transport have seen a surge from 2004 to 2009.

In 2004, almost half of the population preferred to travel by bus but in 2009, it was replaced by bus. Due to this, the greatest surge was seen in buses as it had a surge of 13% compared to all other modes of transport. The commutation through cycles also increased to almost double in 2009 as compared to 2004.

There is a stable change in the proportion of travellers who commute using trains and walking. After buses, the second greatest increase was seen in the number of cyclists as it increased by 7% from 2004 to 2009. Nevertheless, the train remained the least preferred mode of transportation, holding only 3% of all methods in 2004 and 4% in 2009.

Therefore, we can say the data presented in the pie charts suggest that bus transportation has become increasingly popular over the last five years, leading to a decline in car travel. And while walking and cycling were moderately popular, the train remained the least preferred method of commuting to the university in both periods.

NOTE

The preceding question falls into the category of pie chart interpretation questions. These questions can be difficult and confusing, especially considering the complexity of the pie chart and the information depicted on it.
