This can be a bar graph, a pie chart, a process diagram chart. The word limit to attend this particular section is 150 words. Immediately following the first writing task, the candidate must attempt the second one with a word limit of 250 words. IELTS writing task 1
Question Type | Bar Graph |
Minimum Word Limit | 150 words |
Structure | Introduction -In the introduction section, the candidate must write about what the bar graph is depicting which in this case is the change in elephant population among various countries. |
Body - The candidate must analyze the bar graph and understand the changes and variations of the elephant population and write on the change for each country.
The candidate can conclude by mentioning trends displayed by the countries and naming the countries with considerable changes.
Band score parameters | Grammar skills, lexical resource, coherence and clarity and adhering to word limit |
The given graph shows the estimated comparison of the evaluation of the maximum numbers of elephants throughout the years 1997 and 2004.
We can observe from the graph that there is a very significant decline in the numbers of elephants in most of the countries causing an alarming threat to the Asian elephant population. The figures for Thailand and Malaysia showed the greatest decline among the countries. The value seems to be almost half of what it was in 1997 when compared to 2004 in both countries. Malaysia also exhibited a figure that was as low as 1000. We can also see that India continued to be the country with the greatest number of Asian elephants but again, the numbers showed a significant fall in 2004 when they fell to 7500.
Another interesting trend that could be observed in the graph was that in countries such as Vietnam and Laos, the population of Asian elephants was seen to remain stable while most of the other countries exhibited a steady decline. Conversely, in Cambodia, the trends were observed to be positive. The population of Asian elephants rose by almost 25% in Cambodia in 2004 compared to 1997. This can also be seen in the case of China where the numbers have increased.
Note
The bar graph data interpretation questions are widely asked in the IELTS Writing section assessments. The candidates must be prepared to answer such questions on bar graphs through IELTS writing practice by referring to IELTS writing preparation courses. They must also prioritize bar graph questions during their preparation for IELTS exam writing task 1
The IELTS writing task 2 questions involve one essay from a wide range of IELTS writing essays such as debated-based essays, opinion-based essays and so on. An IELTS writing sample answer is also given below.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

IELTS writing task 2 | |
Question Type | Discussion essay |
Minimum Word Limit | 250 words |
Structure | Introduction - Begin by providing a hint about technological advancements and its effects. |
Body - As the candidate moves ahead, they must discuss how technology can impact the environment by citing a few examples. (Both positives and negatives)
Conclusion - Conclude by highlighting the opinion of the candidate on this topic.
Band score parameters | Grammar skills, lexical resource, coherence and clarity and adhering to word limit |
The environment is currently being negatively impacted by technological advancements. While some think that living simpler lives is the only way to solve these environmental issues, I believe that technological advancements may help in their solution.
On the one hand, people think that individuals should lead simpler lives and use less technology. The first recommendation is that instead of using cars, individuals should walk or ride bicycles. This is because there are currently more automobiles being produced and driven, which results in high exhaust fume levels and air pollution being a major problem. To limit the exploitation of natural resources like nuclear power and fossil fuels, people should also make an effort to use less electricity. The yearly Earth Hour event, in which everyone is asked to turn off their lights for sixty minutes, serves as an illustration of this concept.
On the other hand, I think that technological advancements can make a significant difference in environmental preservation. First off, such advancements have made it possible for individuals to find methods of recycling items like glass and paper, which lessens the issue of disposing of waste. Second, technology can contribute to the use of renewable resources in the production of power. For example, numerous nations across the globe have constructed solar-powered power plants. Because of this, producing electricity does not require using non-renewable resources, nor does it cause grave environmental harm.
In conclusion, while some believe that living a simpler life can help prevent environmental difficulties, I believe that technical advancements can help address these challenges.
