What is the minimum cutoff score in GRE and TOEFL?

Trishna Mohanty 6th Jan, 2019

Hello Saran.

The minimum cut off score varies from colleges to colleges. Some colleges take minimum scores and some colleges take high ones. But in average you should atleast score 320 or more in GRE to be in the safe zone, and 161 or more in the quantitative section. Average score in TOEFL should be 90 or more, but some colleges demand lower or higher scores. Along with marks scored, your GPA, Work experience and other achievements add up the chances too.

Goodluck!

Hope this helps :)

I want to study in Germany or Australia about Cinematography, which exams do i need to attend?

Sonali Upadhyay 7th Feb, 2019

Hello,

Biki Das

Every program offered by any university abroad has some requirements that a student needs to fulfill in order to get admitted.

Any university you apply to, outside India have their entrance exams which are conducted in the university itself. Some of the universities do not conduct any entrance exams but they certainly see your results in the competitive exams that are necessary for you to study the subject.

There are competitive exams like TOEFL and IELTS that are necessary to give if you want to srudy abroad. Your score in the exam decides if you are eligible to get admitted or not.

     •  TOEFL -  TOEFL is a competitive exam held to check an individual's command over the language english or their english language abilities.

The exam is conducted for the students who wish to study in foreign universities. The score of the test is accepted in colleges, in over 100 countries.

The score is valid for two years. One can give the test in any year and get enrolled in the same year or the next year. The fees to take the test in our country is somewhere around Rs 11,500/-.

Once you get your score after the results, you can check any university you want to apply to and submit your scores.

   •  IELTS - IELTS ( International English Language Testing System ) is another test taken to judge an individual's language competence.  English is the main subject under ananlysis since it is the mode of communication in over 120 countries now. The test is important to take if you want to study in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom. The test is taken in more than 140 countries. It is valid for two years as well. The fee to take the test is around Rs 11,100. The test involves reading, writing and listening skills in English language.

These were the tests important to take if you want to study abroad. There might be some colleges that do not require these days but that can only be known once you check their application requirements. Some colleges would require other tests that would ensure your skills in sound recording, or video recording or both.

Hope this helps you someway!

Structure of the TOEFL iBT Test:

  • TOEFL iBT is a four hour computerised examination testing you in four sections, namely reading, listening, speaking and writing.
  • Each section is of one hour each. Each section is of 30 marks. The TOEFL result which you will you get will score you out of 120.
  • The reading section lasts for 60-80 minutes comprising of 36-56 questions. In this section you are suppose to read three to four accademic comprehensions and answer questions based on them.
  • Listening section last for 60-90 minutes comprising of  34-51 questions. In this section you are suppose to listen to conversation between people in different settings. You need to familiarize yourself with American, Australian and Canadian English accents.
  • Between the listening and the speaking sections each student appearing needs to take a 10 minute compulsary break. The time is cut out during this break. The time will not be paused for an y other breaks you take during the test.
  • The speaking section is of 20 minutes comprising of six tasks. These tasks make you speak on a familiar topic and on reading and listening tasks.
  • The writing section is of 50 minutes and it comprises of two tastks. The two taks include writing an essay based on a topic you are familiar with and an opinion essay on an issue given to you.
  • It is advised that you take notes during the sections, especially the listening section because you are very likely to forget what the discussion in the segment was about. You will be provided with a rough paper and pencils during the test which you will have to return back after the test gets over.

For listening take note so as you don't forget what the speakers are saying, get fmiliar with their accent. For writing, jot doen points and brain storm properly before you start writing. For speaking, answer the exact question which is being asked, keep it simple.
  • Read for thirty minutes everyday. Try reading non-technical english. Read story archives this has many stories from CNN for ESL learners, or read breaking news. Try summarizing and comprehending whatever you read. Reading will also help you improve your vacobulary.
  • Practice listening to Englsh with your goal in mind. Try understanding and comprehending whatever you listen to into ideas, purpose, transitions, stresses and intonations. Listen to speeches given by people in order familiarize yourself with their accent.
