priyaankasarkar Student Expert 17th Mar, 2019
Dear Akash, TOEFL is a Language Proficiency test that students take for either studying or working abroad. With your TOEFL score, you can apply to Universities that you wish to study or work for. Considering other eligibility criteria as well, your application is either accepted or rejected. So in short, TOEFL tesys the Language proficiency of non native English speakers applying abroad either for higher studies or career opportunities. TOEFL doesnt guarantee you a job though.

What is TOEFL exam ? And how to crack it

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 15th Mar, 2019

Dear Akash, TOEFL is an Language Proficiency test that is taken by non native English speakers who are willing to go abroad either to study or work. This test is accepted by most countrues abroad. There is no minimum score that you need to get to pass the test. Your score is the parameter to decide the Universities that allow you to apply for their courses. So each University had a certain band or a score that is mandatory to be scored for admission into that University. There are 4 sections in TOEFL exam namely Listening, Speaking, Reading and writing. All this takes approximately 4 and 1/2 hours to complete. There is no other way apart from practising mock tests to clear TOEFL. There are many free videos available online and also there are TOEFL coaching centres.

I have completed 12 th in India .i wanted to do architecture in abroad which i can choose and whether toefl or ielts is useful for this ?

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 14th Mar, 2019
Dear Charu, IELTS and TOEFL are both Language proficiency tests. However few Universities accept TOEFL while few others accept IELTS. So it entirely depends on the country that you wish to study in and the University you have chosen. So once you decide upon a University, you have to chrck their official website to see which scores they accept and proceed further.

Hi,do we need to write TOEFL exams for pursuing studies in *music production* and *sound engineering* . Ive chosen to do the course at USA

Sumedha Saxena 5th Mar, 2019

Hello Sujan Rahul,

The only time when you are not required to take TOEFL when applying to a university abroad is when you come from a country where the primary means of communication and instruction is English. As an Indian, you fall in the category of a non-English speaking individual and thus universities will require you to take either IELTS or TOEFL iBT in order to prove to colleges whether you will be able to be compatible with the English they speak and use as the primary means of instruction and communication.

What is the TOEFL iBT test?

  • TOEFL is a standardized and globally accepted examination which measure the candidate's mastery of the English language.
  • TOEFL focuses on how the English language is used in academic settings, and thus most universities accept this examination as it tells them exactly how ready you are in order to effectively adapt to the professors and people, whether it be in casual or academic English, in their university.
  • TOEFL tests you in four section namely - Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing.

Why take the TOEFL?

  • It becomes very difficult for students who are coming from a non-English speaking society to adapt to the heavy usage of English in the universities in USA. Thus, via examinations like TOEFL or IELTS the admission board tests whether you are compatible to understand the lectures taken in a fairly English-based programme.
  • A good TOEFL score will also enhance your application and also give the admission board the confidence about your easy adaptability.
  • It is an examination which is required to be taken by all incoming international students no matter what degree programme they plan on doing.

However, there are certain universities and programmes which ensure that you will not have to take the TOEFL test for admissions. They are as follows:

  • Universities like University of Arkansas and University of Dayton offer admissions to international students without TOEFL, provided that they undertake an Intensive English Language Programme (IELP) prior to their admissions.
  • There are certain community colleges in the Washington State like Shoreline Community College, Edmonds Community College, and Green River College do not require you to take TOEFL or IELTS.

However, in order to get into Tier-1 or Tier-2 colleges you will need to take TOEFL or IELTS. As there are multiple students from all across the world applying to these colleges, a good TOEFL score will be a feather on your cap, it will add shine to your application and also enhance your chances at getting admissions in renown universities.

All the best!

Hello Tripti Pandey,

There is a lot of scope for science based subjects and programmes abroad because of the availability of various research opportunities. Studying forestry and environmental studies abroad is a really wise decision at your part. You will need to write GRE compulsorily, but the decision about whether you write the IELTS or the TOEFL will be based on which countries you plan on applying.

  • GRE Subject Test: In order to improve your profile you might have to give an examination on a particular subject you plan on studying abroad. They offer an examination in biology so it is advised that you give that examination as it tremendously enhance your chances.

In UK you will have to apply to the universities you choose through the UKPASS and then individually apply to each university from their online website portal. You will need to upload scanned copies of certain documents required by the universities you choose. These documents being your passport, filled masters application form, a personal statement specific to your course, academic qualification, letter of recommendation, TOEFL/IELTS test results.

With your applications to colleges in Europe you will need to have copies of your certificate of the previously completed degree, an official translation of grades and course modules, a passport size photo, copy of your passport, proof of language (English), recommendation letters, statement of purpose, and motivation letter.

How can I get direct admission in universities in Canada or germany?(without TOEFL or iets etc.), since their fee is too much.

Sumedha Saxena 4th Mar, 2019

Hello Hemanshu Sogra,

Pathway Programmes:

  • Universities in countries like USA, Germany, and Australia give you the option of taking up pathway programmes in order to help you get into good universities if you do not meet the preliminary university requirements.
  • These pathway programmes train you in subjects varying from English to any sort of academic subject you wish to pursue in your course.
  • This course lasts for around 9-15 months.
  • After doing this course you are given admissions based on you scores in this course and not your high school achievements.

There are many universities in Canada, UK, Norway, Australia and Germany which let you study without giving IELTS.

Study in Canada without IELTS or TOEFL:

  • You need to have attended an institution for at least four years where English had been used as the primary language for communication and delivery of instructions.
  • However, each university has specific result requirements which you will need to meet, whether it be specific marks in English in the last qualifying exam or it be certain aggregate marks/percentage achieved.
  • Universities in Canada which accept students who have not appeared for TOEFL/IELTS are Brock University, Carelton University, University of Regina, University of Winnipeg, Concordia University, Memorial University etc.

Study in Germany without IELTS or TOEFL:

  • Most of the universities in Germany do not require you to have given TOEFL or IELTS.
  • You just need a letter from your school stating your proficiency in the English language.
  • However, if you are going for en English language based test, you will have to qualify English fluency and language tests.
  • Some universties in Germany which do not require you to have given English language tests are University of Siegen, University of Giessen, University of Kaiserslautern etc.

Study in Australia without IELTS or TOEFL:

  • The University of Queensland gives you admission if you have completed a course where English was the primary means of instruction, or if you have worked in an English speaking environment for at least five years.
  • Macquarie University and the University of Adelaide offer admissions only if students accept an English programme before the commencement of their selected course.
  • The University of South Australia and Bond University offer other tests like CAE and PTE.
  • Bond University, the University of Southern Quennsland and the Swinburne University also accept students who had English as the medium of instruction throughout their secondary education.
