TOEFL Test Pattern 2017: The TOEFL test evaluates ability of a non-native English speaker to read, write and speak English. There are four sections in the TOEFL 2017 Test Pattern, namely, listening, reading, speaking and writing which take a total of about four and a half hours to complete. During the TOEFL 2017candidates are asked to perform tasks that combine more than one skill, such as:

a) Reading, listening and then speaking in response to a question
b) Listening and then speaking in response to a question
c) Reading, listening and then writing in response to a question


The marking pattern of the TOEFL test pattern 2017 is as follows:

  • Reading Section (Score of 0–30)

  • Listening Section (Score of 0–30)

  • Speaking Section (Score of 0–30)

  • Writing Section (Score of 0–30)

  • Total TOEFL result (0–120)

Candidates will receive individual TOEFL scores for each section along with the overall TOEFL result. Candidates from some regions like Mainland China, India, Japan, Korea or Taiwan can even apply for TOEFL scholarships depending on their score. 


The break-up of the four sections in TOEFL Test pattern 2017 with allotted marks is given below:

Reading 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answering questions.

Listening to lectures, classroom discussions and conversations, answering questions.

Expressing an opinion on a familiar topic; speaking based on reading and listening tasks.


50 minutes

2 tasks

Writing essay responses based on reading and listening tasks; supporting an opinion in writing.

According to the TOEFL Test Pattern 2017candidates get a break of 10 minutes after the reading and listening tests. Since March 2013, the Listening and Speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT test (Internet-based test) include other native-speaker English accents in addition to accents from North America. As per the TOEFL test pattern 2017, candidates might hear accents from the United Kingdom, New Zealand or Australia.There is no specific TOEFL syllabus. As such, the candidate is not required to refer to any particular subject and study the sections given in the test pattern of TOEFL 2017. The candidate should focus more on developing the mentioned skills.


TOEFL is recognized by more than 9,000 participating institutes of TOEFL across 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States. It is conducted more than 50 times a year at 4,500 test centres worlwide. You can register for TOEFL on a convenient TOEFL test date 2017. TOEFL is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and has two formats of TOEFL- TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test) and TOEFL PBT (paper-based test). TOEFL is usually held on Saturdays and Sundays.
