The University of Southampton in collaboration with British Council launches Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), has launched a free online programme, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ worldwide. The course, which begins on 20 April, will last for four weeks.The aim of MOOC developed by University of Southampton and British Council is to provide learning opportunities to the graduates with an interest in the development of languages and language teaching. It will give them a taste of postgraduate study in the field of English language teaching. The students will have to spend three hours in a week for the course.
In the MOOC programme, the students will be introduced to some latest ideas in research and practice in language learning and teaching. Students can explore ‘Second language learning and what it means to learn language’, ‘Consider language classrooms and how teaching affects language learning’ and ‘Look at the use of technology in teaching, and its benefits and challenges for language learning’. There will bequizzes, activities, discussions and videos filmed around the world featuring experts such as British Council teachers, and staff and students at the University of Southampton. The students will get a Statement of Participation at the successful completion of the online course. There will not be any official academic credit awarded. A fully participating learner in “Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching,” will be eligible to apply for a scholarship to cover part of the fees of MA English Language Teaching (Online) programme.
In order to join MOOC, the students do not need any previous knowledge or experience. There will be no admission interview for the course. Anyone who is interested in knowing the English language better can join the course.
