International students in Japan are encouraged through many scholarships, provided by the Japanese Government, Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), individual universities as well as private companies.

University scholarships are usually awarded on merit, to academically brilliant students. The good part is that there are no separate applications; applications for admissions to the university are also considered for scholarships. Regularly check the university websites for the various scholarships available and the details therein. Sometimes, universities also decide the award of the corporate scholarships and in such a case also, there is no need for a separate application.

Private scholarships offered by companies might have different applications depending upon the category. In such a case a pre-arrival application may be needed to be submitted. Competition for such scholarships is high. Indian students can get partial or full scholarship to study in Japan:

Embassy recommendation
The Japanese Ministry for Education, Science, Sports and Technology (MEXT) awards scholarships which comprise of:

  • A full tuition waiver
  • A monthly stipend of approximately 117,000 JPY (INR 73,000) for undergraduates, 144,000 JPY for master student and 145,000 doctoral students.
  • A roundtrip air-ticket once a year

Note: For undergraduates this scholarship is for five years starting in April and includes a mandatory period of learning Japanese.

One way to apply for a scholarship is to seek a recommendation to MEXT from the Japanese Embassy or Consular Office in India. To receive a recommendation, you need to pass a primary screening conducted by the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi under cooperation from Indian government.

University recommendation:
Through a recommendation by the university you are applying to, you can apply for the MEXT scholarship. You would need an official recommendation from your advisor at the university you are applying to, or from the university you have graduated from providing it has an academic partnership agreement with the university you are applying to.

2. The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Scholarships:

Scholarships are available for Undergraduate, Post graduate as well as short term porgrammes.

by taking the Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU) test

3. Asian Development Bank Japan Scholarship Program:
Scholarships are for students of Masters or PhD programmes with at least 2 years of fulltime work experience.
Candidates need to be 35 years old or less (exceptions maybe made).
