Applications are invited for up to 12 Scholarships being offered by the College of Social Sciences, University of Glasgow to study for a PhD in an area of research linked to the college’s school/subject areas:

Adam Smith Business School [Subjects: Accounting & Finance; Economics and Management] 

School of Education 

School of Interdisciplinary Studies 

School of Law 

School of Social & Political Sciences [Subjects: Central & East European Studies; Economic & Social History; Politics; Sociology, Anthropology & Applied Social Sciences and Urban Studies]   

Home/EU and international applicants are eligible to apply as well as students already in their first year of a University of Glasgow research degree. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible.

The Award:
The scholarship will run for a maximum of three years full-time or 5 years part-time commencing on September/October 2013 and will provide:

  • an annual bursary equivalent to the RCUK rate – currently £13,590 (£6795 part-time) for 2012/13
  • fees at the standard Home/EU or International rate
  • a research support grant of £750 (£375 part-time) per annum

Selection Process:
Applications will be shortlisted by a school selection panel using the following criteria: 

  • 30% - for transcript and references
  • 70% - for research proposal
  • The final selection will be made by a college selection panel and candidates will be notified by Monday 1st April 2013

How to Apply:
Applicants not currently studying for a PhD at the University of Glasgow must also complete an application for admission to a research programme by applying online  
The same documents can be used in support of both the scholarship and admission applications but should be submitted separately 
Note: scholarship application documents to be emailed to and admission application documents uploaded via the online system.

Supporting documents to be uploaded along with the application form:

  • Information about previous study (copies of  degree certificates and transcripts of undergraduate or previous degrees);
  • Two supporting reference letters;
  • Applicants whose first language (or the language of instruction for their first degree) is not English are required to include evidence of their English Language ability;
  • Each Graduate School may have additional specific requirements for Postgraduate Research such as research proposals or written work.
