What is GRE?
The GRE exam is an entrance test used for admissions to MBA programmes, specialised master's programmes, dual degree programmes and doctoral business programmes across the world. The latest update on the GRE exam is that its scores are now accepted by many law schools. Candidates looking to apply to leading graduate, business or law schools across the globe can use the scores of the GRE exam for admissions. As mentioned above GRE exam is of two types - GRE General exam and GRE Subject exam.
GRE full form
As we mentioned earlier, the Graduate Record Examination is the full form of the GRE. The Educational Testing Service also called ETS is the administrator for the GRE exam. The official website of GRE is ets.org/gre. GRE exam is of two types- A GRE General test and a GRE subject test. The GRE General Test can be taken at one of the prometric centres or candidates can also opt for the GRE Home test in the convenience of their homes. GRE subject tests are offered in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Psychology.
GRE General Test has questions on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are required by all. Candidates are tested on skills required for pursuing graduate programmes in business and law. Top universities that accept GRE scores (General Test) are Stanford University, University of Virginia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, University of California, and Los Angeles to name a few. Scores of the GRE test are available 10–15 days after the test date.
Why take the GRE Test?
Any student who is interested in applying to a good MBA, law or dual degree program in top universities and institutes across the world can appear for the GRE exam and use the scores to get admission. GRE entrance exam is commonly preferred and used by many business, graduate and law schools for their admissions. The best of the scores in case of multiple GRE attempts is sent to the universities for admission purposes.
What are the types of GRE exams?
ETS conducts two types of GRE exams. The first is the GRE General Test which is taken by the majority of applicants for business programmes as well as law aspirants. The second is the GRE Subject Test which is offered in a select few subjects and is taken by applicants of specific programmes as mandated by the universities or institutions offering them. The ETS GRE provides the GRE sample papers, through which candidates can gain familiarity with the GRE syllabus and format.
Apart from this basic difference in types of GRE exams, the mode is also of two different types (as per the GRE test):
GRE General Test
1. GRE General Test at a test centre: ETS GRE (General Test) is offered at more than 1000 authorized test centres across 160 cities around the world. GRE General Test is offered on all days throughout the year. Candidates can pick the GRE exam date and time based on their convenience.
2. The GRE General Test at home is also available around the clock. Candidates can book the GRE General Test 7 days a week as appointments are available as early as 24 hours after registration. However, candidates must meet the Equipment and Environment Requirements laid down by ETS before booking their GRE exam date.
GRE Subject Test
ETS administers the GRE Subject Tests for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of the following disciplines:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Psychology
The GRE subject tests are pen and paper-based and administered up to 3 times a year in September, October and April. The duration of the GRE Subject test is 2 hours and 50 minutes.
When should you take the GRE test?
GRE ETS is offered 24 hours, 365 days a year. Candidates can attempt the GRE General test once every 21 days. The number of attempts allowed for the GRE Test (General) is 5 times in one year. This is applicable even if there is a cancellation of the previous GRE Test scores.
A few pointers to keep in mind while deciding when to take the GRE exam, or choosing the GRE test dates, students are advised to ensure that the GRE exam dates are such that the scores are reported in time for the application deadlines. Generally, scores of the GRE exam are sent approximately 10–15 days after the GRE test date.
GRE Subject tests are not offered throughout the year. At present, they are offered in test centres three times a year in April, September and October as pen and paper exams on specific GRE test dates. From September 2023, the Subject tests of the GRE exam will be offered as computer-based exams both at exam centres and at home. Also, the duration for the Physics and Psychology test papers of GRE 2023 is shortened to 2 hours. Chemistry as a subject test will no longer be offered with GRE subject tests.
ETS GRE Exam Duration to be below 2 hours starting September 22, 2023
The GRE exam, which currently lasts less than 4 hours, is reduced to just under 2 hours from September 22, 2023, according to the announcement of ETS - the organization that organizes the GRE test. The shorter version of the GRE General test, starting September 22, 2023, have fewer than 26 Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning questions and one Analytical Writing essay that eases fatigue in the exam. This new change made the GRE (about 2 hours) shorter than the GMAT (3 hours 7 minutes), GMAT Focus Edition (2 hours 15 minutes) and LSAT exams (about 3 hours).

GRE payment modes in India
The following are the accepted GRE exam payment modes in India for the GRE fees
- Credit/Debit Card
- PayPal

- Payments through personal paper checks payable to ETS-GRE
Pros and cons of taking the GRE at Home vs. in a Test Centre
Candidates should understand that the at-home GRE test is not a substitute for the test-centre test. The GRE at-home test was introduced to facilitate the convenience of students who want to take the GRE safely at home. The fee for the GRE test for the GRE at home and the GRE at the test centre is the same. GRE exam fee is 228 USD for Indian students who want to register for GRE test.
The basic difference is that while the GRE at-home test is conducted at home, the GRE test centre test is conducted at the test centre. Although the GRE test centre will have a specific test schedule, students can take the GRE at home at their convenience. However, candidates will need to ensure that they have the necessary system hardware and software to run the GRE test smoothly and without power outages. However, this will not be a problem for students taking the test at the GRE test centre. The GRE exam at-home test is similar to the test-center GRE and can be taken every 21 days, up to five times in any 12-month period (365 days).
How long are GRE scores valid?
The GRE scores are valid for a period of five years from the day of the exam. Students can use their GRE scores for a period of five years when applying to universities to study abroad.
What is the GRE score range?
The GRE score range for the general test is between 130 and 170 for each section. Remember that the total GRE score is calculated based on your Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning only. The maximum score is 340 and the composite score ranges from 260 to 340. The score range for the subject test is from 200 to 900, in increments of 10 points. GRE cores are calculated independently for each test and should only be compared with other scores in the same test subject.
What is the GRE cutoff?
GRE cutoff will vary from college to college, however, scores around 160 to 165 in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are generally considered competitive.
GRE Scholarships
The ETS does not offer any scholarships even to the top scorers. There is no GRE scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by graduate schools and GRE scores are not the only criteria for awarding financial aid. Your academic background, work or research experience or any other merits are also taken into account for awarding the scholarship. This is not to say that GRE scores are not important, they are just as important as other factors when applying for a scholarship.

ETS allows you to submit your results to up to four universities or scholarship programs. If you take the computer-based GRE, you will be asked to choose a scorer at the test centre. On the test day, after you have completed the GRE test and viewed your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, you will be asked to select the score recipients with whom you want to share your GRE test results. If the college of your choice is not on the list, ask the test centre administrator for a list of schools that are not on the list. After the test, you can request an additional score report for $27 per college.
How long will GRE scores be reportable?
Following the GRE exam date, the GRE scores will be reportable for 5 years from the test date. Candidates can check the duration by using the tool available on the GRE official website. The link to check this tool is ets.org/gre/test-takers/general-test/scores/get-scores.html. The GRE score validity is for five years.

I am a fresher engineering graduate applied for BITSOM addmission on the basis of my CAT score and declared waitlisted after PI. I have a good GRE score also which I did not mentioned anywhere in my previous addmission application. Can I apply again on the basis of my GRE score.
Hi,
Since you mentioned that you are waitlisted, it is better to wait for the final results or further updates. Along with that you can apply to other universities for the same. Applying for the same thing again can get your application rejected due to double application. Also, GRE score is just for admission in Universities or colleges outside India. It is advisable to wait for the next update and stick to the qualifications that are required. Adding excess and irrelevant details in any application is not always beneficial.
I hope this helped you.
All the Best!
hi Im an nit delhi student of 1st year I need to know about GRE Exam how to prepare and when I need to attend exam of GRE can I attend in final year can I atten ind 2 nd or 3rd year can any one please explain about it
Hello,
The GRE General Test is one of the world’s largest assessment programs for graduate admissions and the exam is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS).
There are two types of GRE tests, GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test.
Students seeking admission to MS courses in different fields in the US and various other countries appear for GRE General Test.
Through this test, a candidate is evaluated on his analytical writing, quantitative ability, and verbal reasoning skills.
The GRE Subject Test evaluates the candidates’ ability on a particular subject like mathematics , English literature , Physics etc.
Generally, this test is required for getting admission to specialized courses.
There is no eligibility criteria for this The graduate record examination (GRE) is a standardized exam used to measure one's aptitude for abstract thinking in the areas of analytical writing, mathematics, and vocabulary.
The GRE is commonly used by many graduate schools in the U.S. and Canada to determine an applicant's eligibility for the program
I suggest you devote between 4 and 12 weeks to GRE preparation to score good.
Take mock tests , practice model papers , etc.
Vocab is still an important part of the GRE Verbal sections. You can absorb many of the words that will show up on the GRE by reading respected publications such as academic journals etc.
Best regards!!
