Many students do not have the required information about studying abroad and there are very less resources to guide them properly. Here arises the need and importance of study abroad consultants. It is very important to approach a counselor or an agency with good reputation. You should try and take feedback from other students and their parents before visiting any professional consultant about their services and reputation.

To make sure that the study abroad consultant is giving the right advice, it is very important for a student to do his research on the courses, university and the country he would like to study. Once this is taken care of and the student has basic information about the courses and the university offering the course in the country of their choice it would be easier to asses if the consultant/agent is guiding him properly.

Education Consultant Karan Gupta says, "one should always do homework and check online what is told. Use common sense and make your own decisions. No consultant should be telling you what to do; instead consultants should be giving you information and advice and you should be making your own decisions. You should even speak to students and alumni of institutes before you finally decide which institute you should attend. Avoid working with agents as agents represent only specific schools and have vested interests in sending you to a particular school.

“And check the agent's bona fide with the Institution with which you are hoping to engage with,” advises Eileen Roddy, Associate Dean International, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom.
