Top Universities in the World 2014: Subject-wise Ranking
The QS ranking methodology is based on six factors.
Academic Reputation (40%): The QS gives 40% weightage to academic reputation. The academic reputation is analysed on the basis of global survey where the participants are asked to analyse the universities on the basis on their overall performance and work they carry out.
Employer Reputation (10%): The employer reputation is calculated on the basis of responses obtained from the employers on the universities that produce the best graduates who perform well at work.
Student-to-Faculty Ratio (20%): This is the simple measurement that takes into account the student-faculty ratio of each university.
Citations per Faculty (20%): This indicator analyses the research quality of the university.
International Faculty Ratio (5%): This indicator assesses the number of international faculty teaching in the university.
International Student Ratio (5%): This indicator analyses the number of international students studying in the university.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) considers each university for ranking on the basis of the number of Nobel Laureates, Highly Citied Researchers and Field Medallists they have.
Quality of Education (10%): The quality of education is assessed by taking into consideration the number of Nobel Laureates and Field Medallists the university has as alumni.
Quality of Faculty (40%): The quality of faculty is measured using two major criteria a) the number of staff of a university winning Nobel Prizes and Field Medals and b) the number of highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject areas.
Research Output (40%): Research output is assessed on the basis of papers published in Nature and Science and papers indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index.
Per Capita Performance (10%): The per capita academic performance of the university is assessed by dividing the score obtained by all the three above given indicators by the number of full-time equivalent academic staff.
The Times Higher Education World University Ranking is conducted on the basis of 13 performance indicators in order to obtain comprehensive balanced comparisons. These 13 indicators are grouped under five categories:
Teaching (30%): The learning environment of the university or institute
Research (30%): Income, reputation and volume of research conducted by the university
Citations (30%): Research influence of the faculty of the university
Industry Income (2.5%): Innovation
International Outlook (7.5%): Staff, Student and Research output
