Top Engineering Specialisations in USA - When it comes to pursuing engineering abroad, USA is the most prominent destination to study engineering, mainly because of the professional exposure that American universities offer on its campuses. While international students are increasingly branching off to newer fields, engineering still continues to be at the apex of the most desirable programmes. In the USA, which is home to the largest community of overseas students in the world - STEM students make up for the majority of the enrolled students pursuing both undergraduate and graduate courses. More so among Asian students, where the major chunk among STEM students opts for Engineering.
One of the major factors behind the attraction is that the USA offers a multitude of reasons to pursue engineering in its universities; the most important being the dominance of its universities in the top engineering colleges in the World ranking. Majority of the top 10 slots in the league tables are garnered by US universities with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leading the pack across all the major engineering specialisations.

Also being the world’s largest economy, US companies offer the highest wages and a promising growth in career for engineering graduates. According to the American body, National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the average salary for engineering graduates in USA is just over $63,000- among the highest in the world. Therefore, despite being expensive, engineering specialisations in USA are very popular as graduates are able to quickly recover from the investment they make on their course.
Here we have come up with a list of top engineering specialisations in USA with an analysis of the return of investment and cost.'
Civil Engineering- One of the top Engineering Specialisations in USA, universities which offer Civil Engineering prefer students from a Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics background. Companies who hire civil engineers demand that they not only have sound theoretical concept but have lab exposure as well – that is why in the USA, Civil Engineering schools focus on both practical exposure and theory concepts. Their duties may start from observing the city map, visiting the site, creating ideas for new constructions to taking care of government regulations. Civil engineers work with architects and other program managers.
ROI analysis- Average tuition fee for a Bachelors Civil Engineer degree is approximately $20,000-$50.000. In terms of salary, the ROI looks pretty good. A bachelor holding civil engineer degree starts his career in USA with an average of $85,000. As per US Bureau of Labor statistics, projected job growth of a Civil Engineer may increase by 20% during 2012-2022.

Computer Engineering- Computer science is again one of the top Engineering Specialisations in USA. It is designed to study the technology and principles of computer. Computer engineering coursework is prepared to educate students about data designing, system analysis and technical strategies. Computer and software Industries are making other industries more effective.
ROI Analysis-Cost of studying computer specialisation in USA is higher than other countries. Students have to pay for many other expenses except tuition fee which is on an average $40,000. However, the salary packages more or less make up for the investment in the programme as the average salary of a computer engineer is $40,000-$60,000 in USA.

Aerospace Engineering- Aerospace engineering is specially designed to study about developing technologies for aircraft and spacecraft. Aerospace Engineers work in the aviation industry, defense system and space organisations. Their specialisation areas are related to study structure, design, navigation and control, instruments, communication and production management. Mostly aerospace engineers focus and specialise in single field of work. For example, those who only focus on aircraft are called as aeronautical engineers.
ROI Analysis- One of the top Engineering Specialisations in USA, tuition fee to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering is above $30,000 excluding living costs. Growth rate is slower in this domain unlike other specialisations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, requirement of aeronautical engineers may grow by 7% till 2022. The average salary of master degree holder aerospace engineer is $81710-$103,870.

Chemical Engineering- Always among the top Engineering Specialisations in USA, chemical science is a combined study of Physics, Chemistry, Life Science and Mathematics to produce, transform and manage the usage and production of chemicals and energy. The chemical industry works on converting raw materials into product, equipment and energy so they require chemical engineers to be specialised in understanding principles of chemicals, raw materials, ongoing technologies, methods and their productions. Chemical Engineering specialisation has many sub-domains. The US universities offer multiple degrees as per the student’s choice of discipline. Generally, chemical engineers work in plants to operate and design new methods.
ROI Analysis-Cost of studying Chemical Engineering in prominent universities in USA is above $20,000. As per the salary survey conducted by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2011, average salary of a chemical engineer was approximately $100,000.

Biological engineering- Bio-engineering is a combined study of Physics, Chemistry and Biology to understand the biological phenomena in health science and develop new technology to improve health. This study is designed to understand materials, energy, natural resources and biological system. Biological engineers use the principles of biology and methods of engineering to produce economically feasible products.
ROI Analysis- Biological engineers study a combination of two major disciplines. They usually work with practitioners, drug companies, hospitals, medical equipment manufacturing companies etc. Cost of studying biological engineering for a UG degree is approximately $30,000. However, as per U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012 survey, an average income of biological engineers is above $90.000.

Application deadline for most of the universities for Fall Semester is between November and January for the top engineering specialisations in USA. However, some universities offer rolling admissions and candidates can apply any time as soon as they complete the academic year. US universities may take weeks or in some cases few months to respond on the applications. That’s why aspirants are required to submit applications a year ago. Raja, we have been discussing your career and aspirations for a while now and we appreciate that you want to take Career360's opinion on the matter of your career. So by now, you are aware of the fact what it takes to become a neurosurgeon and what it is to clear USMLE, practise as a resident in the US. We also have discussed the life style and the salary part. Now regarding the first half and later half of the career, we only wish we could predict our timeline on this planet. We do not which might be the first half or which might be the later part. But no wish is bad. If you want to achieve something, you should lest you regret for the rest of your lofe. Now to practise in the US, you may have to appear for USMLE, clear the step 1 and then practise as a resident before you can get the license to practise as a full time neurosurgeon. That is a long process that might take good 4-5 years. You study MBBS in India for 50 months and then complete the 1 year rotational internship and it takes you as many as 5 years. And appearing for USMLE and then working as a resident take another 4 years and so 10 years of your life are spent getting a valid license to practise in the US. And then lets say after 5 years you want to move to Singapore, that takes a whole different processing because you need to appear for their license exam. And you work in Singapore for lets say another 5 years and you come back to India. 15 years of your life are spent studying and getting licenses. But the beauty is within 15 years you can actually get license to practise in 3 countries. So you need to take a call. Or how about you finish MBBS in India, move to Singapore to study your MD/MS and plan on moving to the US? That way the transition is going to be smoother.
Well I guess they are because they get very good six figure salary and have a great job security although it's stressing but still they like their job cause they got into it knowing the stress it may carry. Neurosurgery is very much in demand and is a very great speciality in medical field.
I hope my answer helps.
All the best.
It will all depend upon the lifestyle and the office hours you put in the work. The number of opd days, OT days and the visit to the wards for rounds. It all affect the free time period for a doctor. In USA,you have to pay tax for the services thus it can be little less than what you make in india
It will totally depend where are you working and what are you getting paid.
As US is anyways costly ,there lifestyle tends to change.Neurosurgeons in Us are paid according to their qualification as well as where they work
According to research
The average income for a neurosurgeon is $775,968
The middle range income is approx $704,170
the lowest paid are $350,000
And the top 10 % of the neurosurgeon get a pay of $1,229,881 per year!
So it totally depends upon your qualification and the place you work if you can have a comfortable life or not
