Engineering is one of the most sought-after domains in India as well as across the globe. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and School of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) are the first choice of aspirants. Every year millions of aspirants apply to get admission in various B.Tech programmes run by these institutions, competing for few thousand seats. The competition is even tougher when it comes to the top programmes like Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering. These institutions also have a number of seat dedicated to the foreign students especially the NRI’s and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf countries (CIWG). The government of India has made special arrangement for these students and has reserved seats for them in premier technical institutions.
International students in Indian campuses
Top Engineering institutions like NIT’s and IIIT’s have allotted seats for NRI’s and Children of Indians Working in Gulf (CIWG) under DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad). The candidates are selected on the basis of their SAT scores.
A total of 36,605 foreign students opted to pursue undergraduate programmes in India in 2015–16, states a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) report. Of these, more than 9000 foreign students are pursuing engineering programmes in different institutions across India.
Let's look at the seat availability in the top engineering branches for NRI; Mechanical, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Civil Engineering in the NITs and IIITs, and the SPAs.
Mechanical Engineering is the top engineering branches for NRI’s for Engineering. Mechanical engineering helps students in understand the working mechanisms of heavy tools and machineries required in designing of electric motors, automobiles, aircrafts and other heavy vehicles. The course covers technical areas like distribution of electricity through generators, transformers, transmission lines, lighting and wiring in buildings. Looking at the seat matrix in the Mechanical engineering course, there are a total of 346 seats reserved for NRI and CIWG candidates out of this 112 seats are exclusively meant for CIWG children.
If we look at NITs there are as the maximum number of seats are there, there we have 192 seats reserved under the NRI quota, that in CIWG is 91, thereby a total of 283 seats are there.
In the three IIITs (Allahabad, Jabalpur, and Chennai), the data available with us states that only IIIT D&M Jabalpur has four seats reserved out of which two seats are under the NRI quota and two under the CIWG.

Electronics and Communication Engineering
The Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is among the dream branches for top engineering branches for NRI for Engineering as it offers immense growth potential, high salary, job opportunities and continuous industry growth. It focuses on the design of underlying hardware systems which has application in areas such as telecommunications, energy and electronics sectors. In the NITs there are 261 seats, there are 174 seats under the NRI quota and 87 under the CIWG category. Among the IIITs we have data from three of them mentioned above, IIIT Allahabad has five seats in all (4 NRI, 1 CIWG), while that in IIIT D&M is four (3 NRI, 1 CIWG).

Another top engineering branch for NRI’s aspiring to pursue education in India is Computer Science Engineering. The bankch is also among the few B.Tech programmes where there is a huge demand among candidates, it focuses on the basic elements of computer programming and networking. Candidates willing to pursue this course in India can apply at the NITs, there are 259 seats at the undergraduate level of which 175 seats are under the NRI category and 84 seats under the CIWG. Among the IIITs, IIIT D&M has four seats in all, three under the NRI quota and one under the CIWG.

Civil is one the oldest and most popular branches of engineering, which makes it one of the top engineering branches for NRI aspiring to pursue the course in India. It deals with planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating infrastructures while protecting the public and environmental health as well as improving existing infrastructure. In NITs there 233 seats reserved for NRI and CIWG candidates of this, there are 156 seats reserved under the NRI quota, 77 under the CIWG. There are no seats in IIITs and SPAs in this stream as the institutions do not run this programme.
