Shivani Bhatt, 27 Feb 2018

Top Indian technical institutes like NIT’s and IIIT’s accept Non-Resident Indians and Children of Workers in Gulf. The admission process takes place through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA), Scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

A total of 45 institutes participate in the admission process. These are 29 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 03 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), 03 Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), and 10 other Premier Technical Institutions/Central Universities.

The combined seats across all the programmes and institutions amount to a total of 2350 seats in 66 undergraduate programmes for NRI admissions. Based on the seat matrix released by DASA, a total of 781 seats have been reserved for CIWG category and 1569 for the general category. The majority of seats are in Mechanical Engineering, ECE, EE, CSE and Civil Engineering courses. These account for approximately half of the total seats.

Out of the 2350 seats which have been reserved for various categories under the DASA admission scheme, only 924 students were admitted which leaves 1426 seats unfilled across various courses and institutions.

The next most sought-after programmes are Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Architecture, Computer Engineering and Bio-technology. The admission process to these institutions is transparent. For the year 2018 – 19, the admission process admission to various programmes in the participating institutes under the DASA scheme will be coordinated by Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, India.

Changes in DASA admissions

A number of important changes have been effected in the DASA admissions framework and have been incorporated in the 2017 admission process.

  • Eligibility criteria
    A SAT score of 1800

6.5 CGPA out of 10 or 60% in all subjects of qualifying exam

  •  Seat Allotment
The seats left vacant after CIWG admissions would be reverted to General NRI/OCI/PIO/ FN category. CIWG candidates will be allotted seats reserved for that particular category only.

  • Fee Payment
The parents of the aspirants who are selected against the seats whether residing in India or abroad have the option of paying the course fee under the DASA admission scheme in Indian rupees (at existing exchange rates) in lieu of US Dollars.

This will be same for postgraduate candidates as well.
