Top Indian technical institutes like NIT’s and IIIT’s accept Non-Resident Indians and Children of Workers in Gulf. The admission process takes place through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA), Scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
A total of 45 institutes participate in the admission process. These are 29 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 03 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), 03 Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), and 10 other Premier Technical Institutions/Central Universities.
The combined seats across all the programmes and institutions amount to a total of 2350 seats in 66 undergraduate programmes for NRI admissions. Based on the seat matrix released by DASA, a total of 781 seats have been reserved for CIWG category and 1569 for the general category. The majority of seats are in Mechanical Engineering, ECE, EE, CSE and Civil Engineering courses. These account for approximately half of the total seats.
Out of the 2350 seats which have been reserved for various categories under the DASA admission scheme, only 924 students were admitted which leaves 1426 seats unfilled across various courses and institutions.
The next most sought-after programmes are Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Architecture, Computer Engineering and Bio-technology. The admission process to these institutions is transparent. For the year 2018 – 19, the admission process admission to various programmes in the participating institutes under the DASA scheme will be coordinated by Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, India.
Changes in DASA admissions
A number of important changes have been effected in the DASA admissions framework and have been incorporated in the 2017 admission process.

6.5 CGPA out of 10 or 60% in all subjects of qualifying exam
Seat AllotmentThe seats left vacant after CIWG admissions would be reverted to General NRI/OCI/PIO/ FN category. CIWG candidates will be allotted seats reserved for that particular category only.
Fee PaymentThe parents of the aspirants who are selected against the seats whether residing in India or abroad have the option of paying the course fee under the DASA admission scheme in Indian rupees (at existing exchange rates) in lieu of US Dollars.
This will be same for postgraduate candidates as well.

Bachelors of Architecture
The five-year undergraduate course in Architecture is offered at School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, Delhi and Vijayawada along with NIT Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Hamirpur, Bhopal, Calicut, and Jaipur. A total of 71 seats are reserved of which 47 are of general candidates and 24 for CIWG candidates.
Out of the 8 seats reserved for SPA Delhi in General and CIWG categories, in 2017 the institution offered admission to 6 candidates 3 each from general and CIWG category under the DASA admission scheme.

A truly multi-disciplinary branch of engineering, Chemical engineering is a combination of natural sciences, life sciences, mathematics and economics to take care and manage the various aspects of industrial processes which are used to make valuable products out of raw materials.
As many as 15% of the seats are reserved for NRI / PIO/OCI and CIWG. A total of 133 seats are reserved out of which at 46 are reserved for CIWG candidates across 19 NIT’s, and IIT’s under the DASA admission.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering: A professional engineering discipline which has emerged in the late 19th century after the widespread use of communication devices like telegraph, telephone and electricity, deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.
A total 13 institutions participate in DASA and offer Electrical and Electronics Engineering. As many as 116 seats are reserved for foreign nationals, PIO, CIWG’s, OCI. Out of the 116, 37 are reserved for CIWG candidates.
