Tests for study in USA - In order to study in the USA, a candidate has to appear for some of the entrance tests depending on the course he wishes to pursue.
Here is a lowdown on some of the entrance tests required by foreign students wishing to study in the USA.
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT/ NMSQT) is a programme co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It is a standardised test that provides first-hand practice for SAT. It also gives US citizens and permanent residents a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programmes and gain access to college and career planning tools. PSAT/ NMSQT measures Critical Reading skills, Math problem-solving skills and Writing skills. It has five sections: two 25-minute critical reading sections, two 25-minute Math sections and one 30-minute writing skills section. The duration of the test is two hours and 10 minutes. It is held in October every year.
AP TestsAP (Advanced Placement) tests are taken by students in various subjects to earn credit at most colleges and universities in the US as well as colleges and universities in more than 40 other countries. With a little bit of planning and effort, you can save a lot of time and money in the United States. Students currently in Class 11or 12 can take the tests. Some of the subjects in which students can take the AP exams are: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, World History, Human Geography, English Language and Composition, United States History, Computer Science, Calculus, Statistics, Environmental Science, etc. These tests are administered by the College Board in the month of May every year. The last date for registeration for the examination is March 1. The fee for each AP Exam is US$86.MCATMedical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardised, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee’s problem solving, critical thinking and writing skills, and knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Scores are reported in Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample and Biological Sciences. Medical colleges consider MCAT exam scores as part of their admission process. Most of the US medical schools require MCAT exam scores. It is generally taken by students who are juniors in college, that is, in their third year of study. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores that are more than three years old.
LSATLaw School Admission Test (LSAT) is a half-day, standardised test administered four times each year at designated testing centres throughout the world. The All American Bar Association (ABA)-approved law schools, most Canadian law schools and many other law schools require applicants to take LSAT. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. Many law schools require that LSAT be taken by December for admission the following fall. However, taking the test earlierâin June or Septemberâis often advised. The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker’s score. The unscored section, commonly referred to as the variable section, is used to pretest new test questions or for research. The placement of this section will vary. A 35-minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test. LSAT does not score the writing sample, but copies of the writing sample are sent to all law schools to which you apply.
