Robert S. McNamara Fellowship- Established in 1982 to honor the former President of the World Bank, the Robert S. McNamara Fellowship provides grants to PhD candidates to pursue their fellowship at any host institution outside their home country. The fellowship was, basically, established to fund PhD aspirants from developing countries and was also set up with contributions from the World Bank and the governments of Bangladesh, China, India, Kuwait, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru and former Yugoslavia.

The fellowship only covers a doctoral research period of 6 to 10 months. So, after the period is over the candidate has to either support herself or apply for alternative funding options.

 

What does the Robert S. McNamara Fellowship cover?

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowship offers up to US$25,000 for a 6-10 month period starting usually from July to December.  The aspirant’s host institution should be located in a World Bank member country. The PhD research should be preferably conducted in development-related issues and under the supervision of a research advisor.

 

The scholarship covers the following benefits:

A round-trip economy class, least expensive airfare to and from your host institution and your home country;

  • Tuition fees, if any, charged by the host institution to carry out the research. The fee should be in accordance with the aspirant’s research and budget proposal;

  • A round-trip economy class, least expensive airfare to and from your host institution and your home country;

  • A stipend to cover subsistence,  accommodation, basic medical insurance. The amount of this stipend varies depending on the host country;

  • Allowance for the cost of research to cover books, materials, software, local field trips (for data collection), research expenses, seminars and other sundry expenses.

Eligibility criteria for Robert S. McNamara Fellowship:

An aspirant can be considered eligible if he/she fulfills the given criteria:

  • The aspirant’s home country is a World Bank member developing country.

  • The aspirant is not a dual citizen of a developed country or a country that is not a World Bank member.

  • The aspirant is currently enrolled in a PhD program in a World Bank member country.

  • The aspirant will have completed all coursework and exam requirements for your PhD at the time of application.

  • The aspirant has a master’s degree.

  • The aspirant is 35 years or younger as of February 11, 2015.

  • The aspirant is enrolled in a PhD program in his/her home country, and not currently employed.

  • The aspirant is enrolled in a PhD program in his/her home country and is employed in your home country.

  • The aspirant is enrolled in a PhD program in a World Bank member country outside of his/her home country and is employed in their home country.

Besides the above, you also need to fulfill the mentioned criteria:

  • The aspirant is not an Executive Director (ED), ED’s alternate, staff, or consultant of the World Bank and you do not have any relatives or in-laws who are employed by the World Bank Group in any capacity.
  • He/she has not previously been the recipient of the World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship.
  • He/she is accepted as a visiting scholar for a period of six to ten months by a university or research center in a World Bank member country other than his/hers home country.
  • The aspirant’s research proposal is endorsed by his/her’s PhD thesis supervisor and his host institution research advisor.
  • You can begin your fellowship between July and December.

You are able to complete your proposed fellowship research in 6 to 10 months.

You commit to working in your home country after completion of your PhD.

 

When and how to apply

Applications for the fellowship are available online. It usually opens in January. Interestingly, there is no limitation on the number of times a student can apply. So, if an aspirant does not make the cut this time he/she can apply again for the same in succeeding years.

Candidates are required to attach the following documents alongwith the application form:

  1. An official letter from the institution that states that he/she is enrolled as a PhD student and has completed all coursework and exam requirements for the doctoral program.

  2. A proof of employment, if any.

  3. An official diploma of the highest degree earned.

  4. A proposed budget for the fellowship. The budget should be in the template suggested by World Bank.
