Recognised as a country with a world-class educational system at affordable prices, Russia has emerged as an alternative for many Indian students, not so affluent. If you want to be a doctor, engineer or for that matter a pilot, you can consider Russia as an option. Of the top100 universities in world ranking, about 30 positions are occupied by the Russian medical universities.

Top medical institutions
At least, 48 medical universities in Russia are listed in the WHO’s directory of medical schools thus making students eligible to appear for the screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations on behalf of the MCI (get more details in this issue). After clearing the MCI screening test, a student can practice medicine in India. WHO and UNESCO have rated the Moscow Medical Academy, Russian State Medical University and the St. Petersburg State Medical University in second, third and tenth positions respectively in the world.

Main attraction
Russia, known for its courses in medicine, aerospace, aviation and engineering, offers courses with liberal admission criteria. The only thing which is required is Russian language, though many Russian institutions now offer courses in English language.

Eligibility criteria and duration
For medical, it is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as well as a minimum of 50 percent marks in aggregate. For engineering, you need minimum of 40 percent marks in 10+2. The duration of medical courses in English medium is six years and Russian medium is seven years. Bachelor's course is for a period of four years in case of Engineering and five and half years in case of Master's degree. Only some engineering branches like mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering are available in English.

Master’s courses
The criteria of admission is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Depending upon the university, place of study and course, the fee structure ranges between $1500-2,500 for Russian medium and $3000-8,000 for English medium per year. The fee includes tuition, hostel accommodation and study material. Each student additionally needs about $ 800-1,000 for food and personal expenses per year.

Get more information
As all the institutions are governed by Russian Government, students are advised to avail of authentic information at Rus Education (at www.ruseducation.in), which jointly works with Culture Centre of Russian Embassy, and is authorised by various universities to provide direct admission, process their documents and apply for the invitation letter and also visa stamping. Rus Education has offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Bangaluru and Hyderabad.

is it good doing genitic engineering in Russia

dheeraj reddy 15th Feb, 2020
Hi tohith

I wouldn't recommend at all. For genetic engineering, there are much better options in US/UK with world-class universities and laboratories. Russian universities are on par in few fields of engineering like aerospace but even then it is tough for international students to study there and work later on. Language would be an issue too.
So I wouldn't recommend russia for your studies as there are much better alternatives including India.

Goodluck !
