Study Abroad Popular Courses & Institutes: Among the countries that have a fairly large Indian student community, the choice of courses and the disciplines within, vary. It is interesting to see a pattern emerging for the most preferred institutes and courses for students studying abroad. The trend is also towards professional courses in undergraduate studies.

Here, we list out the preferred choices of Indian students based on the responses from official sources…

USA

What draws Indian students in such large numbers to the USA is flexibility and hands on learning in an environment that has the best of resources and infrastructure. Job opportunity, diverse campus experience, peer learning and overall development are the other prime driving forces.

United Kingdom

Apart from the popular regular courses in engineering, medicine and management; the one-year Masters’ and customised short courses are on the rise. A host of factors attract Indians to opt for UK programmes such as English language, high value skills for jobs and research. A key development is post-study work where Indian graduates can work in graduate level jobs for 3 years with a possibility of 3-year extension.

Australia

The elements that aid programme selection in Australia comprise research orientation, affordability, employment linkage and in general a course curriculum that emphasises on assignments for an in-depth subject understanding. A multi-cultural society accommodating a wider student mix, better quality of life and features like permission for internship and temporary work placement add to their decision making.

Germany

A tradition of strong industry-academia interaction, course-led internships, intensive research and increasing number of English language courses have all contributed to the popularity of Germany. Another recent initiative is the EU Blue Card and an unlimited work and residence permit that allows foreign graduates of German universities unrestricted access to the job market.

Germany

Russia

Mostly Indian students enrol for medical courses, an area of Russian expertise available at quite cost-effective rates. Global exposure, state-of –the art technology labs and affordable education are the key drivers for choosing a course in Russia.

France

The key attraction for many Indian and other international students is the broad selection of majors at French institutions. Master level courses are preferred that are taught in English in France.

France

Netherlands

Students love the creative environment and quality education. Compulsory Internships/projects as part of the curriculum and problem-based learning approach are the primary driving forces to choose Netherlands. The fact that the Dutch Government offers a one-year search period for jobs after completion of study is highly valued by students.

Netherlands

Japan

Flexibility in courses, hands-on learning and the freedom of expression are the key distinguishing factors while choosing a programme in a Japanese university. Also the fact that almost every deserving student is offered a university scholarship/waiver- comes as an enabler.

Japan

Singapore

Known for its advanced skill and research driven education system, Singapore is a preferred destination due to its proximity to India, culture, cost of education and living. It is also attractive to study a course in Singapore campus offered by universities in the UK, US, France and Australia. Good scholarships add to the decision.

Singapore

Hong Kong

Availability of scholarships, remarkable infrastructure that aid in learning/ research and rich mix of Asian and Western influences help in the decision to zero-in on Hong Kong. Another benefit is that non-local students are allowed to take internships and part-time jobs during their studies and stay in Hong Kong for 12 months without any restrictions after graduation.
