According to Open Doors data by the Institute of International Education, 122,655 international students opted for their PhD courses from American universities in 2015−2016 as against the previous year’s intake of 118,104 students.

Like any other courses in the USA, PhD programmes are expensive also. However, a number of financial aids are offered in the form of scholarships, loans and paid employments, among others, to help students meet their college expenses. Federal and State agencies, colleges, high schools, foundations, universities and corporations usually provide such facilities. Fellowship for PhD in many universities in the USA is provided irrespective of need. Usually, most of these aids are merit-based and subject to revision on yearly basis.

 

Finding financial aid for PhD degree is somewhat different compared to undergraduate degrees. A number of PhD scholarships in the USA are available for aspirants. Here, we bring you a list of a few external scholarships available for those pursuing a PhD in the USA.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: The Fulbright Program

The scholarships for ‘The Fulbright Program’ are awarded to those interested in pursuing undergraduate program,Masters or PhD in non-degree postgraduate studies.The grant covers expenses like tuition fee, textbooks, airfare, stipend and health insurance. Annually 8,000 scholarships are awarded.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

For experienced professionals, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides a year of professional enrichment in the United States from developing countries who are World Bank members. This is a merit-based fellowship for PhD in the USA.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: Robert S. McNamara (RSM) Fellowship Program

A scholarship of up to $25,000 (USD) for nationals of developing country to conduct development-related PhD research supervised by a host research advisor at a university, research or development institution in a World Bank member country. This PhD Scholarship in the USA is granted for a 6 to 10 month period starting between April and September. It also covers travel to the host country.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: Environmental Fellowship Program at Harvard University in USA

The fellows will receive about  $65,000 per year and will also be eligible for a health insurance and a maximum of  $2,500 reimbursement for travel expenses. The fellowship includes a $2,500 allowance for other professional expenses.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: The Joint Japan World Bank

The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program provides full scholarships to students from World Bank member countries to pursue development-related studies at selected universities around the world.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: International Fellowships (formerly known as the American Association of University Women)

Awarded to women who are not the US citizens or permanent residents. AAUW (formerly known as the American Association of University Women)  awards international fellowships for full-time study or research in the United States worth $18,000 for Masters, $20,000 for PhD and $30,000 for Postdoctoral students.

           

PhD scholarships in USA: International Scholarship Programme, The Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan fellowship is provided for two years for tuition fee and cost of living. Travel expenses are not included in the Aga Khan fellowship.  These PhD scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant and 50% loan basis. The loan has to be paid back within 5 years with an annual surcharge of 5%. A guarantor is required.

Founded in 18th century, this private Ivy League university is known for research. Merit-based scholarships are offered by Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Columbia University. The fellowships are renewed on a yearly basis by individual departments.

Another top private Ivy League university, founded in 1636, and is known for its 11 academic units. Being a highly research university, the cost of education at Harvard is very high but its large endowment allows financial aid to its students. Full financial support is offered to PhD students of Harvard University. This includes tuition, health fee and basic living expenses for five years. The funding is provided through a combination of tuition grants, stipends, traineeships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships and other appointments.

One of the Ivy League universities, Yale is organized into 14 constituent schools. It offers a  full tuition fellowship, hospitalization fellowship and a minimum level of stipend support of approximately $30,000 to all doctoral candidates.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a Californian private doctorate offering university. One of the leading research institutions of higher education in the world, University of Chicago is a private research university. The University of Chicago aids most doctoral students by providing them competitive funding packages for five years covering tuition, health insurance, stipend for living expenses and research  support.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: University of Pennsylvania

Founded by Benjamin Franklin, University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League university located in Philadelphia. University of Pennsylvania supports its PhD students by providing multi-year financial packages which cover tuition, fees, health insurance and stipend. Different fields of studies have different terms for the aid. Merit-based awards or support in return for service are also provided by some schools at Upenn.

Ranked 26th by the QS ranking in 2017, Northwestern University is a private university specializing in research. It is ranked seventh in QS world ranking in Materials Sciences subject. PhD students at Northwestern are full-time and funded through a combination of internal and external funding for a minimum of five years. The funding includes tuition, health insurance and stipend.

Featuring among the top business schools in the world, Michigan Ross aids its doctoral students by providing full funding for five years. The funding includes tuition, health insurance and a stipend. The students need not apply for a separate application for aid or funding. Its a three and a half year research assistantship.

 

PhD scholarships in USA: Brown University

One of the top Ivy League universities, Brown University was the first in the US to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation. The Graduate School at Brown University offers five years of guaranteed financial support which includes tuition, stipend and health-services fee. This support is provided in the form of teaching or research assistantship, fellowship or proctorship.

 

This is a small list of scholarships and financial aid for PhD available in the USA. Every university has its own funding system for PhD and post-doctoral candidates.
