NRI quota in Top Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu - Non Resident Indian (NRI) students aspiring to study in top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu can choose from over 525 All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved institutions in the state. According to data by AICTE, these institutions had over 269,871 total seats in 2017-2018 for various engineering and technology courses, out of which 707 seats are reserved under NRI quota. As much as 5% of the total seats are reserved under NRI quota for NRI students or children of NRI candidates. However, this number may increase as any seats left after the last round in general and Foreign National/ Overseas Citizen of India/Person of Indian Origin category may come under NRI quota, subject to the approval of AICTE. In the event of non-availability of NRI students, the seats reserved under NRI quota shall be given to general candidates. In some colleges like Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), there are separate reservations for NRI students, and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWG) and PIO/OCI card holders.

NRI Quota: Eligibility Criteria for Tamil Nadu Engineering Colleges
Students, to be eligible for admission under NRI quota, must fulfill the below requirements:
Student must be a Non-Resident Indian or have his/her parents accorded the status of NRI by the government of India, to qualify for NRI quota. Non-resident Indians are people of Indian birth or descent who live outside the Republic of India. An Indian Citizen who stays abroad for employment/carrying on business or vocation outside India or under circumstances with an intention for an uncertain duration of stay is a non-resident.
NRI student should have attained the age of 16+ in the same calendar year as the qualifying examination
NRI student must have completed 12 years of schooling (equivalent to 10+2 system of Indian education) and passed with good grades while having at least one subject out of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the qualifying examination. PIO/FN/CIWG Quota in Top Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu
Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holder, Foreign Nationals and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries aspiring to study in top engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu can apply under PIO/FN/CWIG quota. Over 15% seats over and above the ‘approved intake’ can be reserved under PIO/FN/CWIG quota, which amounts to 2755 in top engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu. One-third of these 15% seats are reserved for the Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf Countries. For applying under FN/PIO/CIWG quota, the student must either be a Foreign National or Person of Indian origin or Overseas Citizenship of India card holder or Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries.
“Foreign National” means the Citizen of Countries other than India who is not of Indian origin as defined under OCI/ PIO.
Person of Indian Origin (PIO) - is a citizen of any country other than Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal or Pakistan, if he at any time held an Indian passport, or he or either of his parents or spouse were citizens of India by virtue of the Constitution.
Overseas Citizenship of India - is a pseudo-citizenship scheme established because the constitution of India does not permit full dual citizenship. An OCI card, which is a long-term visa with restrictions on voting rights and government jobs, acts as the proof of OCI and is available to certain PIOs.
CIWG stands for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries. CIWGC is a scheme generated by the Ministry of India for the children of Indian expatriates in Gulf countries looking for admissions in India.

In case of applying under FN quota, passport of a country other than India is required. Students are also advised to apply for the visa immediately after acceptance to the university.
In case of PIO or OCI, OCI card holder or necessary documents to prove status
Students who fall under the CIWG scheme are required to submit proof showing either parent working in a gulf country, which has to be duly signed by the employer of the parent. A copy of passport, visa and work permit (in case any) of the child’s parent in Gulf are also required to be submitted as proof.
