NRI Quota in Top Engineering Colleges in Karnataka - Students seeking Non Resident Indian (NRI) admission in colleges of Karnataka for undergraduate courses in Engineering and Technology have NRI quota reserved for them by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Top engineering colleges in Karnataka are approved by AICTE to reserve a maximum of 5% seats in each course for NRI quota. According to AICTE data, 197 institutes offer undergraduate courses in engineering with a total intake of 102610. There are 2 private, one deemed and a government-aided college affiliated to universities which award the degree to students:
Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal
Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum
Top engineering colleges in Karnataka offer 4 year Bachelors in diverse streams like Aeronautical, Electronics, Computer Science, Civil, Biomedical etc, with different seats reserved for each course. This number may increase as supernumerary seats for Foreign Nationals/ OCI/ PIO/Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries if left vacant after the last round of admission, can be converted to NRI seats. Being a descendant of a NRI also qualifies the student to apply under NRI quota; admissions are conducted on the basis of merit by selecting candidates from a pool of eligible NRI applicants.
In the event of non-availability of NRI students, seats under NRI quota will be converted to general category and given to students on merit. For admission under NRI quota, competent authority will prepare a merit list by inviting applications from eligible NRI students. Selected candidates will be offered seats under NRI quota for the courses that they had applied for. Candidate must pay the first installment of the fee to confirm his/her admission under NRI quota. The admission process of each college is different and students are advised to visit respective website to know more about the admission procedure and additional documents required for NRI admission. To apply under NRI quota in Manipal Institute of Technology, students have to submit an application form and pay a registration fee of Rs 2500 in the form of a demand draft.
NRI admission process at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE) is done through Common Entrance Test (CET), conducted by Karnataka Government & Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK). Students with meritorious ranking, based on CET score, are considered for admission under NRI quota. The admission process commences in the month of March every year and concludes on 31st July of the same year.
In Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, merit in NRI admission is determined by marks obtained by NRI student in science subjects and mathematics in CET, and the marks obtained in the same subjects in the qualifying examination, taken in equal proportion.

PIO/FN/CIWG Quota in Top Engineering Colleges in Karnataka
Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holder, Foreign Nationals and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries aspiring to study in top engineering colleges of Karnataka can apply under PIO/FN/CWIG quota. Over 15% seats over and above the ‘approved intake’ can be reserved under PIO/FN/CWIG quota, which amounts to 1984 in top engineering colleges of Karnataka. One-third of these 15% seats are reserved for the Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf Countries. For applying under FN/PIO/CIWG quota, the student must either be a Foreign National or Person of Indian origin or Overseas Citizenship of India card holder or Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries.
“Foreign National” means the Citizen of Countries other than India who is not of Indian origin as defined under OCI/ PIO.
Person of Indian Origin (PIO) - is a citizen of any country other than Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal or Pakistan, if he at any time held an Indian passport, or he or either of his parents or spouse were citizens of India by virtue of the Constitution.
Overseas Citizenship of India - is a pseudo-citizenship scheme established because the constitution of India does not permit full dual citizenship. An OCI card, which is a long-term visa with restrictions on voting rights and government jobs, acts as the proof of OCI and is available to certain PIOs.
CIWG stands for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries. CIWGC is a scheme generated by the Ministry of India for the children of Indian expatriates in Gulf countries looking for admissions in India.
Students need to submit similar documents as NRI along with documents given below:
In case of applying under FN quota, passport of a country other than India is required. Students are also advised to apply for the visa after acceptance to the university
In case of PIO or OCI, OCI card holder or necessary documents to prove status
Students who fall under the CIWG scheme are required to submit proof showing either parent working in a gulf country, which has to be duly signed by the employer of the parent. A copy of passport, visa and work permit (in case any) of the child’s parent in Gulf are also required to be submitted as proof.
