NRI Quota in Medical Colleges in Himachal Pradesh - Students seeking NRI admissions in government and private medical colleges of Himachal Pradesh can apply through NRI quota. There are seven government and private medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh with 31 seats reserved for NRI admissions. As many as 15% of seats are reserved for NRI admissions, as per Medical Council of India, only in private medical colleges. However, in Himachal Pradesh, a certain number of seats are reserved for NRI students in the government medical colleges as well. Himachal Pradesh University is the counselling conducting body for NRI admissions on behalf of Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Himachal Pradesh. Admission process for an NRI student is similar to an Indian resident and is based on the marks scored in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). NEET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is scheduled to be conducted on May 5, 2019. All the medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh are affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla which awards the degree to students upon completion of the course.

NRI Admissions: Know Medical Colleges in Himachal Pradesh

NRI admission of a student is based on his/her NEET rank i.e. marks scored by the candidate in relation to other students who have applied through NRI quota. Interested NRI students who have qualified NEET and fulfill the eligibility criteria can register for counselling by submitting the application form and paying a fee of Rs 1800. Important dates pertaining to application submission and different rounds of counselling are given at the end of the article. On the day of counselling, students must be present to furnish documents for verification and payment of fee. In case of fee being payed in installments, bank guarantee must be submitted by the NRI student. Any seats left after NRI admission will be filled by unreserved bona fide state candidates. For candidates seeking NRI admission, a certificate of equivalence has to be obtained by the Association of Indian Universities which clearly shows the subject-wise percentage of marks and the stream chosen for qualifying examination.

NRI seat Eligibility Criteria: A Supreme Court order has clarified the eligibility conditions for a person to be able to apply for the NRI seat. The criteria are mentioned below.

  • Either parent should be an NRI and shall ordinarily be residing abroad as an NRI
  • The NRI sponsor the student for admission should be a first-degree relative of the aspirant and residing abroad as an NRI
  • If the aspirant has no parents or near relatives or has been taken as a ward by a nearest relative such aspirants may also be considered for the NRI seat provided the guardian has bona fide treated the student as ward and the guardian is required to file an affidavit showing his/her interest in the affairs of the student and also their relationship with the student and such a person should be an NRI, and ordinarily residing abroad.

‘Nearest relative’ should be one of the following.

  • Real brother and sister of father i.e. real aunt and real uncle
  • Real brother and sister of mother i.e. real maternal aunt and real maternal uncle
  • Father and mother of either parent i.e. maternal or paternal grandfather and  maternal or paternal grandmother
  • First degree paternal and maternal cousins
  • The relative should be an NRI

Documents Required for NRI admission

Self-attested photocopies of the following documents along with the respective originals are required for NRI admission:

  • Print out of online Application Form

  • Admit Card and Result Card of NEET-UG-2018 along with detailed marks and merit rank.

  • Non-Resident Indian Card/Employment Card issued by the Employer.

  • Immigration/Employment visa entry on the passport along with the details of the Passport

  • Certificate issued by the Indian Embassy/High Commission of the country where the NRI is residing.

  • Latest assessment order of the income authority, either in India or in the country of employment filed in NRI’s status.

  • Matriculation passing certificate or its equivalent with the date of birth.

  • Pass certificate of plus one (11th grade) or its equivalent examination from abroad.

  • Qualifying examination passing certificate (10+2) with details of subject-wise marks or its equivalent.

  • A certificate of good conduct/character from the Principal of the previous institution.

  • Equivalence certificate issued by the H.P. Board of School Education in case of NRI student has passed his/her 10+2 examinations from a board other than H.P. Board or CBSE or ICSE.

Eligibility Criteria for NRI admission 

NRI students must be eligible and apply for online counselling to be considered for admission:

  • Passed the Senior Secondary Examination or the ISC Examination with the last two years comprising of science subjects including practical tests, and English at a level not less than the course prescribed by NCERT. NRI students who have passed 10+2 from open schools or as private candidates will not be eligible for admission. or

    the B.Sc. Examination of an Indian University or

    Any other examinations which are similar in scope and standard to the above examinations.

  • Individually passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and obtained a minimum of 50% marks, taken together in these subjects, at the qualifying examination.

  • Equivalency shall be determined, as per regulations of the Medical Council of India, by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.

  • Age criteria – NRI student should have completed at least 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December 2019. For NRI admission, the upper age limit is 25 years as on the date of examination.

NRI definition for Government and Private Medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh

To be eligible for admission through NRI quota, students must satisfy the definition of NRI as stated in the Income Tax Act of 1961. ‘Non-resident Indian’ is any person who does not meet the criteria of ‘resident of India’. Persons who stay in India for at least 182 days in a financial year, or 365 days spread out over 4 years and at least 60 days in that year are termed as ‘Resident in India’.

NRI students, according to the state of Himachal Pradesh, are wards of Indian citizen residing abroad.

A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is a citizen of any country other than Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal or Pakistan, if he at any time held an Indian passport, or he or either of his parents or spouse were citizens of India by virtue of the Constitution.

Overseas Citizenship of India - is a pseudo-citizenship scheme established because the constitution of India does not permit full dual citizenship. An OCI card, which is a long-term visa with restrictions on voting rights and government jobs, acts as proof of OCI and is available to certain PIOs.
