Masters in International Management - For years, MBA, or Master in Business Administration, has been the most popular and sought-after qualification in management around the world. But with the increase in competition and the globalization, a new management degree has taken the world by storm, with graduates of masters in international management ranking amongst some of the most sought-after professionals in the world. A masters in international management is also called an MIM qualification and differs from other management qualifications in the aspect that it focuses primarily on international business and administration. Students focus upon discipline-based concepts associated with management in the international business context and the application of theoretical knowledge to practical global business situations. In many global organizations, the MIM salary and role is equivalent to that of MBA graduates. The masters in international management is sometimes confused with the masters in management qualification as both are abbreviated as MIM.

MIM vs MBA

Amongst prospective students, the dilemma between picking an MIM or an MBA is always a challenge. In regard to the MIM vs MBA comparison, MIM stands for master in management. A masters in international management is often termed to be a subset or a specialization of MIM. Contrary to popular belief, both the degrees are not identical despite the comparable MBA and MIM salary as well as the masters in international management jobs seeping into the MBA employment pool. Both the degrees offer advanced qualifications in management, but the MIM is considered more theoretical than the MBA. Additionally, the admission requirements are staggeringly different in the MIM vs MBA battle. Where the top MBA programs require prior work experience of around 5-8 years, MIM programs don’t have any work experience requirements and are open to fresh graduates.

Masters in International Management: Eligibility

The eligibility for any masters in international management program is dependent upon the type of degree which is awarded by the program.

  • For MBA programs in international management, such as the MIM in Canada offered by the University of Toronto, a certain amount of prior work experience (at least 2 years) is required. On the other hand, non-MBA programs usually don’t have any prior work experience requirements but work experience is highly beneficial for prospective students to maximize their learning experience from the program.

  • An academic qualification in business administration or management is not a sound prerequisite, but a strong background in either mathematics or economics is a must for applicants. If the applicant has a different academic qualification then substantial work experience in a management-related role is beneficial towards the selection process and ensures that the applicant will be able to perform in masters in international management jobs.

  • Many of the programs for MIM in Europe are dual degree programs and these also require the candidate to be enrolled in an MSc or MBA program prior to applying for the dual degree option leading to a masters in international management.
