Masters in Engineering Management: What, Where and How

MEM vs MBA

A masters in engineering management is often referred to as either an MEM course or an MS in engineering management. Many would argue that the value of a masters in engineering management degree is not equivalent to that of an MBA qualification, but when it comes to engineering graduates, the MEM course is highly advantageous as it implements both technical and administrative aspects. Therefore, there is no hard and fast way to determine the better degree from MEM vs MBA and it is primarily dependent upon the type of jobs which the student hopes to be eligible for as well as previous academic qualifications. In this regard, most masters in engineering management jobs are increasingly inclined toward the technical and IT industry whereas MBA is more administratively versatile. For engineering or technical graduates, an engineering management career holds more scope for the utilization of specialized skills and knowledge, increases the value of engineering management degree and therefore offers better professional prospects.

Masters in Engineering Management: Eligibility

In order to be eligible for most of the best masters in engineering management or MEM courses around the world, there are a certain number of prerequisites which need to be satisfied by applicants regarding prior academic records.

  • Prospective students must ideally be engineering graduates or graduates with a related quantitative minor or major. This is a one of the major requirements in order to ensure that students are able to maximize the value of engineering management degree.

  • Applicants must have a strong foundation in calculus, linear algebra as well as programming methodology. Some universities allow students to undertake extra classes associated with these subjects in order to ensure that they are able to effectively follow the coursework and subsequently implement their gained knowledge in their engineering management career.

  • The undergraduate qualification of the applicant should be a four-year bachelor’s program. Some universities also have a minimum GPA requirement whereas others accept candidates based on their standardized test scores instead.

The scores are essentially in order to ensure that the applicant has the right amount of knowledge in order to successfully complete the course and obtain subsequent jobs after masters in engineering management.

  • Apart from the GRE general test scores, candidates also can submit GRE subject scores in mathematics to boost their application. Although this is usually not a prerequisite, it is helpful for highly competitive programs like the program for masters in engineering management in Germany at TUM.

  • Some universities also accept GMAT scores in place of GRE scores for admission consideration.

  • Official transcripts from all previous institutes of tertiary education.

  • Applicants need to submit a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) for admission.
